What rifle do I want???

Well, my parents and grandparents are asking me what I want for Christmas. And all I could say was "a rifle". When they asked "What kind?" I had a blank look and thousands blurred thru my head.
I am in Indiana so I can get almost anything I want, no stupid CA rules.
I like ARs, FALs and the like But I am also really interested in Bolt Action Varmint rifles and the like. This is a super hard decision for me. I have looked at the Remington 700 PSS and the Winchester Model 70 with some nice glass and a bipod. However I also would be interested in an AR. I would like to be able to shoot in competition, but not sure what type. I love varminting and it would have to be able to do that too.
On another note I am unsure on what price range to stay in. Under $1000 is probably the price range, maybe a bit more if I am super nice.
Please throw out suggestions and tell me why you would recommend it. (Also I am not a huge AK, or SKS fan. I need something that can be 1 or 2 MOA accurate preferably.)

Oh Yeah

I also shoot in IDPA pistol, and this rifle would also have to be able to be used in 3-gun competition. I understand that a bolt action wouldn't but I am STILL interested in these anyway.

Sounds like a nice AR - perhaps an HBAR. You can do the varmit & IDPA bit both with it.

Woudn't usually recommend an AR for a first rifle, but sounds like you know what you want to do with it ....

Well, since this will most likely be a Christmas present, Im not sure bout the Model 70 deal goin thru Perfessr. However, I am curious as to why you don't recommend an AR. Would that fact that I can field strip one with my eyes closed help? (I am very familiar with the M16A1 and th A2 from the Marine Corps ROTC.)

AR's can be difficult to make extremely accurate and still possibly stay competition legal, depending on the rules of your specific competition. However, they are nice in that several uppers with different dedicated uses can be used with one lower. They all need major trigger work. I would get myself a nice lower with a competition trigger. Then decide on a flat top floated bull barrel with a nice piece of glass, vs. a competition legal upper with iron sights. Nice thing is that whatever you decide they can buy you the other upper for your birthday:D

Have fun,
Mike

Come to the Indy 1500 Gun Show the end of the month at the state fairgrounds. $70 million worth of hardware, including full auto and silencers and even a GE minigun....

I sell knives, not guns, so I can be very impartial. There are some REALLY good prices.
I recommend staying away from Midwest Gun Exchange. Good prices, but nasty habits.

More like:
Want: Angela Taylor
Need: Kelly Monaco

At least that's the way my mind works.

The AR would be able to fullfil most, if not all, of your demands, but you're going to have put a lot of money into uppers to do it.

You might also look into the M96 Expeditionary rifle/carbing/recon. I'm not sure about the long range accuracy question, but it is modular and would be something different on the scene. Since it takes AR mags, you could switch back and forth if needs or desires be.

If for whatever reason you go with the bolt, don't bother with the 700P. Save the $200 and get the 700 VS. It's the same barreled action with a blued finish instead of parkerized, and the stock is different.

I have considered the Garand, they are very affordable, and fairly accurate. However they also give me a heck of a time with my shoulder. I'm a pretty lithe guy and they just "rub me the wrong way". I shoot an AR more accurately, and the 700 I shot also felt pretty good. I appreciate all the advice, and it looks like my initial inclinations are being seconded. AR all the way.
The more I think about it the more I like it. I can eventually (too bad I'm a poor college student) be able to get 50 BMG uppers, flattop with glass, shorty uppers, match barreled with iron, etc. The flexibility of the design is something that I have thought more and more about lately.
Plust the fact that It will eventually stand a good chance of being the only thing between my life and death is pretty important. Since the Marines aren't issuing G3s I suppose I had better learn to be an expert with the weapon I will be carrying.
Thanks all who have replied. I will research some more on which brand to get, but I have a feeling it will probably come between Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, or possibly DPMS.

PUMC_TomG,

It seems like you have made up your mind! Buy it, the most important thing is that you purchace a rifle that you really enjoy!! I think you will be happy with your decision.

Santa needs to spread the wealth. If you're getting an AR, that must mean I'm getting the shaft or a lump of coal or sumptin:confused:

I don't get the comments about having to buy several uppers.

An HBAR flattop heavy should do all you'd want except may be a tad weighty at times. Decent scope mount like a B-Square on the rail & swap out for irons if you want.

I've one of the Match Targets & it's a sweet shooter but I do wish I had a shorty/lightweight upper .... never mind my remark about several uppers - wish I had a few myself. :p

Thanks to all for the advice. On another note Navyjoe, it helps being spoiled after figuring out who Santa REALLY is. I'll see what I can't do however. Just send me the email address of YOUR santa, and I'll ask them to be especially nice to you this Christmas. Maybe even send them a link to the Bushy site.
