What makes a gun "pretty?"

Anybody ever run a thread to discuss the eye appeal of guns? Like why is a Luger better looking than a P38? Nothing to do with function or reliability but just what do you find "attractive" in the lines of a gun?
Like why doesn't Taurus "look" as neat as a S&W or a Ruger like a Colt? Prejudice or objectivity?

I like reliable and effective guns. A PPSh41 is beautiful to me. A heavily engraved bouble shotgun isn't.

Among similar guns, anything that looks visually balanced would be preferred...and that is as pure an opinion as it gets :)

Handguns had a thread some months ago about pistol beauty contests.

I don't know what it is about some guns that attracts me. A subdued, non-garish finish is always good (no chrome for me, thanks). Smooth lines and curves.

Kinda like one of the Supremes said about porn, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." ;)

Coinneach..... I suppose that means you are selling the nickel .32 Iver Johnson with the mother of pearl grips and zoot suit holster.
heh

An ugly gun is one in the hands of my enemy. A beautiful gun is in my hands, or in the hands of my allies. Concise enough? :)

They usually look better from behind. :D No perverted remarks!! :o

I like 'em clean and well maintained, and I'm partial to wood grips. I have blued, nickle, SS, flat black, and bead-blasted. they are all attractivein their own way. I also like older guns that have a burnished patina from use and regular maintenance, but I hate rust.

I'm still deciding on the specifics of what I like best--- but take a 1911, smooth it out, checker the front strap at 30 lpi, have a reeeaaaallly nice finish applied, and finally add either exotic wood or stag grips on it and I think you've got beautiful. :)

Take a gun such as a .45 vaquero revolver, blued and moderately engraving with gold enlays, with a set of stag grips on it and one of Gunslingers polish jobs, this makes for a beautiful gun, this is going to be my next shopping spree on guns is a set of .45 so I can get them fixed up by next year so I can do cowboy mounting shooting.

Sorry Chris (six), but I can't help myself...
I know what you mean. I look for slim grips, goes off every time I stroke the trigger, no slop in the action, and chambers the round firmly. Ability to discharge multiple times rapidly is also a plus. Most of the time it's just the way it feels in your hand.

Mounted cowboy shooting, its a club here in Missouri which they have in other states to, its where your on horseback go through a course shooting balloons, the object is to get through it the quickest and shoot the most balloons, I have put a link here on some information about it, but of course this is in Ca. couldn't find one for Missouri, but this explains what it is.

Now that sounds like fun... Have to tell you a little story about the appy I'm in the middle of breaking. She is afraid of nothing. Was in the round corral doing my ground work. Could not for the life of me get her to move. I tried everything except for beat her with the whip (I don't like being cruel). Came up with the idea of loading up some shells with just the primer in them. Got behind her and set one off. She ran half way around the pen, turned and looked at me, so I set off another one. At this point she put her head down and started eating grass. I walked over to her and let a couple more fly behind her.... She never even flinched, just kept eating her grass.

Now I've had a lot of horses and broke a few so that I could shoot off of them for deer hunting, etc, but I've never had one who got over the sound of gun fire as fast as she did.

And by the way.... All shots fired were at the ground pointed away from her.

Thanks Fal, I appreciate the information and I also got your e-mail. :)

Bookkie, that was a funny story, the first time the shooters around here started Gunslinger and I went to watch their practice and most of their horses hasn't been around that many guns and some of them didn't like it very well. I'm hoping by next year I will be ready for this, need to get horse trained for riding and around guns too and me trained, this might be the hard part but you have to start somewhere. But since I went to the first practice I decided I really wanted to do this and through my experience with this, when I really want to do something, I do it. The horseback won't take much training because when I was smaller I rode quite a bit, but haven't in a few years but when it comes to guns, I have probably have lots of training but I figure by the time they start up next year I will be ready to go. Bookkie you had a funny story you'll probably enjoy this one. I probably shouldn't tell on myself but I will. The first mounted practice we went to there was a guy there that knew Gunslinger and he was standing there talking with us, after watching them practice for awhile I wanted to do it, so I just asked that guy if I could borrow his horse and guns, and the guy said sure, then Gunslinger asked him "HAVE YOU EVER HAD A HORSE SHOT OUT FROM UNDER THE RIDER?" the guy just laughed so there went my chance of trying it. That Gunslinger gets me into more trouble, sometimes he's not safe taking out in the public. LOL I was actually just kidding with the guy because I knew he wouldn't let me, and I probably would of tried if he persisted though. LOL :)
