What kind of rifle do I have?

I recently inherited an old rifle from my great uncle, but I don't what kind of rifle it is or what kind of ammo it will hold. As a kid I remember shooting the rifle out in the country with my uncle, but that was 25 years ago and I can't remember what kind of rifle it is. Any help would be appreciated.

Most certainly an Enfield. Tikirocker and wogpotter are our 2 most versed members in deciphering the clues as to what model, as there were many, as well as which factory produced it. Judging by the marks, I think it might have some neat history.

Hopefully it's obvious, but, that thing in the middle sticking up, is the rear sight, and should be folded back flat.

Yep. WWI vintage Enfield.

No. 1 MkIII* SMLE, looks like 1918 manufacture. Probably the most
common SMLE out there---production of this model started in 1915,
and continued into the 1950's. May or may not have seen action in WWI.

Someone will be along shortly to decipher all the marks for you.

Yep, more than likely .303 British.

To be 100% safe, have a gunsmith take a peek.

There is a .303 Savage, so don’t mix the two.
