What is this?

What's this on top of the SAW? I've never seen one of these before. It looks like some type of scope... Night vision?

Yes it is a M249 (SAW) and from what i know the new model the Military is geting can be used with a scope, and it do's look like a Night vision scope to me.

It's a picture of some guy who wanted a class III weapon with NVS and the only way he could get his mits on one was to enlist.

I think the trooper is just posing for the camera shot as the cap is still on and it's not night.

IIRC you have a "day" cover that allows you to turn it on to zero during daylight hours.

You hit the nail on the head, my AN/PVS2 has a day cover, very dark lens cover) that allows it to be turned on during the day to set zero. I am sure that is what you see in the picture.

DUH! Now it all falls into place!

Had I thought lens cap, it would have been a lot clearer to me. :)

I thought it might be some sort of emitter of some type, but there didn't seem to be any of the other stuff that you normally see with an active system.
