I got this old smith for a song yesterday from a shooting buddy of mine. Even though it had....(key word had) alot of rust on it, is a sweet little revo. Problem is I cant tell what model it is. I know its a K frame but thats about as far as my experience with these goes. the serial # is 1564XX. Any help is appreciated.

nope no prefix........just 1564XX.

I called S&W and they said I needed to contact the historian Roy Jinks because this gun predates the system.

on the bottom of grip frame there is a letter C then on the other side, the serial number.

truly perplexed here

you may be correct on caliber.on the barrel is marked Smith and Wesson 38 s&w spc ctg.

I imagine thats the same one.

what differences are there between 38 and 38 s&w??

It looks like the M&P (later called the M10). Usually seen in .38 Special, could also be .38 S&W (also called .38 British or .38/200). If the number you posted is correct and has no prefix it was made around 1910 or so. I think a 2" barrel would be very unusual for this date so it may have been shortened at some point. Is the lettering on the barrel intact or is some missing? Be aware that the tempering on the cylinders of guns made during this period was not the greatest and I would restrict myself to standard velocity loads if this were my gun.

from what I can tell it has never been shortened all lettering is intact, also the lettering on the barrel is in same font and style as the guns frame so I would imagine it came from the factory this way.

well at least I can shoot readily available ammo in it. I am not really sure this will be a shooter though.......is too pretty, may shoot it once or twice but I have lots of other guns for range work , home defense, and concealed carry, this one and the other old smiths I just picked up I think will be more to play with. Maybe shoot a little, but nothing serious.

I dont think they are worth all that much but I like them.

That "C" might be the prefix. (C prefix for pre-Model 10's ran from '48 to '67)

If that's the case, your gun dates to '48.

It has the upper sideplate screw, so it's definitely pre-'55. Looks like you got a keeper, there.

Tamara is on the money here. It's an early post war pre model 10 (M&P). Somewhere around 1948-1950, or there-abouts.

The C is a prefix to the serial number and 1948 is the corect date. That is the first year of the C prefix. It S from 1945-1948 then became C until 1967.

One quick way to spot a pre-1943 gun is that under the cylinder release on the left side of the frame there will be a small hole in the early guns. This was part of the early hammer-block system S&W used and was changed in 1943.

Oh, +P loads wouldn't concern me in a post WWII gun.
