This Iver was my grandfathers. I was just wondering how to tell more about what it is. I know there not worth a ton but was wondering what I could sell it for, as I have no use for it.
Thanks

Iver Johnson made decent revolvers and sold many to the LE market along with the bicycles they made !!
The photo shows a top break .Cops in those days typically used .32 revolvers and rode bicycles . Their advertising showed the safety of those guns with the "hammer the hammer" phrase showing a hammer hitting the gun's hammer. In those days many guns didn't have that safety device. And the owl's face is their trademark.

"Decent" is about all you can say about them. They were a "price" gun aimed at the less affluent market. I have one just like that in the photo I've had for almost 50 years. In fact, back in my younger days I was a T.T. driver, and used to pick up freight (guns) at the former Iver Johnson plant in Fitchburg, MA. :p

So back to this gun tho, how do I tell how old it is? also I think its a 38 is that correct. Seems hard to find inforation about what they are really. Does it have any value at all?

The patent date will at least tell you that it can't be older than that. Google Iver Johnson and see whatt you can learn.

How long is the barrel? Is it a .38 or a .32? The name on the gun was used from the 1890s until either 1915 or the Depression, I can't recall. The serial number doesn't help until you know which model and caliber it is.

It's a $50 gun if you can find a buyer.

This my grandfather's IJ .32 with a 3-inch barrel.

P.S. - Note which way the owl is facing.

"Quick visual clues that identify a Third Model (1909 to 1941) include a longer rear sight on top of the latch and the owl head on the grips is looking directly at you , rather than towards the muzzle end of the barrel as was the case on the Second Model."
