What is this Colt 1911 .22 pistol?

I saw an unfired Colt 1911 style .22. It was 20+ years old in the box. He claimed the slide has never been racked, and it looks it. It is not the conversion kit. It was made as a complete .22 pistol by Colt. It doesn't have "Ace" on the slide. The box confirms that it's not a conversion. Anyway, what is this thing worth? Should it function well? Can it be tuned for BE?

I don't know what sort of Colt you saw, but even if it's not marked "Ace", it's still probably the same mechanism.

I wouldn't bother trying to tune it up for bullseye shooting. The Ace-type mechanism is not designed for match grade accuracy and the pistol has to be worth a bunch of money if it's a rare model and new in box. You could sell the pistol to a Colt collector, buy a Marvel .22 conversion, and have plenty of moola left over.

I have an Ace Conversion unit on a Series 70 Colt and it shoots great, as long as you remember to keep the floating chamber clean after every couple of hundred rounds or so. I love mine, but have you priced mags for them lately, the last one that I bought about 7 years ago was $25.00, heavens knows what they cost these days, if you can even find them.

$50 and up for the ACE mags. I have a circa 1980 ACE and really enjoy it. Not a bullseye gun, but reasonably accurate and fun to shoot.

e'ville, if it's a true Colt Service Model ACE, it should be stamped "ACE" in a diamond on the slide. Check to see if the slide is marked "Conversion Unit", in which case it may be a "home made" ACE. Otherwise, I'm not sure what it is. A NIB Service Model ACE from 1978-1982 (S/N SM14001-SM43830) sells in the $900 range.
