What is the purpose of .22 "BB & CB Caps"?

What are .22 "BB & CB Caps for"? I think they have no powder in them, just a round or cone shaped bullet on a shorter then short case. Maybe for indoor practice?
Thanks

Greetings,

I use them for backyard varminting (raccoons, possums). They're not so loud as a .22, but more powerful than a pellet gun.

I heard once the CB caps were intended for use in older 22's that had been declared safe to shoot by a competent gunsmith, but were too frail for modern smokeless ammunition, ie. some of the very early S&W 22's of civil war vintage. Don't try this in any until you confirm this however.

They have powder but not as much as a normal round. An Aguila Colibri has no powder. They are nice for places like cities where discharging a firearm may be illegal.

They also work well on the neighbors cat that is using your garden as a litterbox. ;) SamC

Originally developed in early-mid 1800's by a frenchman named Flobert for indoor target shooting in the parlor! Many highly ornate target guns were made specifically for them.

Actually, the Bulleted Breech and Conical Bullet loads were the first two .22 Rimfire rounds.

The BB cap was a blackpowder primer cap with a round lead ball inserted into it. The later CB cap had a cone shaped projectile. Both were popular in Europe as gallery rounds and led to the development of the .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle.

Never shot anything alive with a BB or CB cap, though I do have a friend who once used a Gold Cup to take out a thumb sized black widow in the machine shop once. Hole got patched before the boss got back.

God those were fun days. Shop had been burglarized twice, so nobody stayed there alone - remember answering the door one night with a 4" 44 mag in right and left front pockets and an AR-15 behind the door but set down within reach. Boss wore an Officer's Model Match 38, a Chiefs Special in his hip pocket, and kept an M1 carbine handy. His son the "Gold Cup Kid" and I were college students and dedicated members of the gun of the month club, and my dad had more guns than we did.

When things got slow the kid and I would take our jackrabbit guns round back of the shop and see who could put a hole in a jack first with our 458 elephant rifles. Ah for the good old days. Very Evil Grin!!!

Watch out for richochets with these LV rounds, especially on round and half-round wood beams. Also some rounds are more powerful loadings.
Every one should have one packet of each IE a packet of the round balls and pointy ones I say!
Also worth considering are the only slightly less ancient 'Long Zs' made by Winchester only, I think. They are the short RF projectile in a long rifle case(so loads in all magazines including S/Autos) and hit hard @750FPS at 25metres and very quiet indeed. These are recommended for shooting puddy-kats without return to owner worse for wear and sob stories/RSPCA...or so I am told :)

Good for shooting pigeaons in farmers barns,You don't make leaks in the roof. You have fun and the farmers are real happy to get the pigeons out of the barn

Warning. Do not shoot ANY bullets into the air, even CBs and BBs, in inhabited areas. For flying vermin, use CCI .22 shotshells. Slightly louder, but oh so satisfying for pigeons, crow-like birds and other airborne vermin.

Say, BTW, what's everyone's policy on a fast and painless death for vermin (possums, raccoons)? My record isn't very good. If they wander away wounded, so be it.

My method is to have my wife hold the maglight and while the varmit stares into the light I whack em between the eyes with my scoped .22 rifle. Very very effective and humane. I use the reminton subsonic ammo which is accurate and has adequate power. In my neighborhood the report goes unnoticed. We always have kids setting off illegal fireworks, or the neighbors shooting pests with high velocity .22 so my little crack is unnoticed.

ALWAYS select an appropriate backstop, it will help insure that you don't end up in court.
