What is the most rust resistant finish available?

I have a rust phobia. I think this phobia started in my youth when I got my first handgun, a CVA capnball gun. I would spend hours trying to clean this gun but nothing would stop it from rusting.

The only blued gun I own is a 243 Remington BDL 700, I inherited. It has been sitting in my safe for several years not seeing any use because of fears of it rusting away.

I know that as long as I cleaned it properly I wouldn't have any problems with rust, but its a phobia (mental condition) I have that makes so fearful of blued guns rusting.

What would be the most durable protective metal finish I could have put on my 243? Is there a protective finish I could have applied to internal metal parts? Is there a process I could have done to the stock to preserve it? How much will this all cost me? I have plans on using this gun for some varmint hunting and would like to do the best weather proofing possible.

Thank you,

I'd say Roguard is probably one of the top contenders for most rust resistant finishes available; but it doesn't stand up to wear much better than parkerizing in my experience.

Its probably smarter to go with a finish that is less rust resistant but has more wear resistance (hardchrome, electroless nickel and NP3 seem to be the leaders here). After all, a Roguard finish that stands up to 2000 hours in a 110 degree constant salt spray is great; but if the finish wears off at the high points in a year or two, then you are exposing bare metal to rust.

The NP3 stands up for only 100 hours (compared to something like 20 for bluing and 30 for parkerizing I think) but from what I've heard, it seems to be a lot more wear resistant. All of the finishes I mentioned - NP3, hardchrome, and electroless nickel have self-lubricating properties and can be applied to internals also. The downside is that they are all coatings and between the increased slickness of internals and the few microns of coating, your firearm may need some tweaking to function reliably.

STEALTH COAT!

Go see the guys at STEALTH COAT!

These are great people with a GREAT product!

The owner keeps a shotgun treated with his finish hanging off a pier in the gulf when he's not showing it off at Guns Shows. Looks awesome.

I've done several FALS with them and am sending a couple G3s to them soon. I left my Fal outside for days (even rained on) NO RUST!! I've seen and/or handled just about every finish available and am sold on this particular one.

I have pics of the latest FAL sent to them here:

Their process is pretty unique, VERY durable and thin. They'll do your internal components as well. You may want to disassemble it yourself before shipping. I'm not sure if they do that or not (I like to put my own guns back together myself).

If you do go with them, please drop my name (I'd like them to know I sent someon to them).

You will not regret it.

There is always tenifer which is used on Glocks. My Glock 23 is almost rust proof. I never have to worry about it rusting. The only problem is getting it done to another gun. I don't think tenifer finishing is available in the U.S. because of environmental concerns or some bs. If you can figure a way out to get tenifer, then that would be my recommendation; other than that I'd advise to probably go with a nickel ot stainless finish.

USE IT

use it, clean it, lightly oil
repeat very often....i say again repeat very often

If you do this you will wear it out first, before it rust away in a safe. Then give it to a nephew or your own child as a nice starter rifle...

Keith Buckner, I checked out their web sight and am real interested in the "Stealth Coat". Do you know of any other places on the web where I could read about their procedure or some of their customers feedback?

Anyone else on here know anything about the stealth coat?

Thanks,

Gunz,
There have been several users on www.HK91.com that have used them as well as The FAL Files.

Post a query relative to this subject and you shold get some responses.

Also email or call them (stealth-coat).
Ollie and Debbie are sorta new to the net, so their website is a little primitive and it MAY take a while to get an email back form them, but their product really is superior.

I just had a badly rusted MAK (how it got rusted is a whole nuther story) refinished by:

www.shootiniron.com

Just got it back about two weeks ago.

They use a process that sounds similar to what is being used by the Stealth people.

They completely disassemble the weapon, prep all of the metal parts, parkerize the metal and then put a moly coat over the top. The resulting finish is self lubricating.

My MAK came back looking great. The metal parts were completely covered including pins, receiver, trigger group, everything.

Now the question that remains is how will the finish hold up. But it seems very tough. The application was excellent and the turn around about three weeks.

The total cost, including shipping both ways was $180.00
