What is the most powerful rifle you would shoot on a weekly or monthly basis?

From Field postions [ie sitting, kneeling, offhand, with a little bit of prone and field rest] not from the bench.

30-06, but then again I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to rifle recoil. Hanguns I love the feel of a 4 inch model 29 stocked to the gills, with factory wood grips. Also like to shoot my Smith 640 with Craig Spegal boot grips with 158 grain 357's so maybe I'm just a rifle wuss.

The largest calibers I've shot have been the .300 Win Mag and .45-70. I could shoot cases of these calibers and burn out barrels right and left if I had the time and money.

On the other hand, my Mossberg 590 20" barrel chaps my butt using slugs. Ten or so at a stretch is about my limit. I think it's the relatively narrow butt stock that's doing it.

Savage 116 in 30-06. That's my most powerful rifle, and I have a lot of ammo. I opt for 165 gr sierra boattails. I hunt deer elk antelope and black bear with it. I shoot it a lot.

For Sunday fun, something big and slow, like a .45-70 or a Sharps, at a 500-yard target. Three or four guys, and an informal "match".

For everyday sort of shooting, the primary hunting rifle, but mostly with reduced loads. Overall, I prefer my '06, of course...

For serious work on eye-finger coordination, take whatever you have with the worst trigger and shoot from the offhand position. If you can discipline yourself properly in that situation, you'll turn yourself into an expert with anything decent. :)

But I ain't a masochist...

I shoot almost all of my 7.62x39 from offhand position. Truthfully, my weaknesses are in the other positions. I would rather take an offhand position with support than an unsupported kneeling, sitting or prone position. I prefer to add support rather than modify my position as I find some aspects of the NRA positions very uncomfortable (especially sitting). I only shoot sitting from a Harris bipod.
As for more powerful calibers, I just can't afford to shoot as much .308 or 7mmRM, even though I reload.

PoodleShooter: I don't think there is such a thing as a supported offhand position. I wasn't talking about NRA shooting positions. I don't use a shooting jacket or pads or such when shooting. I do use a Shooting Sling [Ching type sling].

I also practice shooting from kneeling with the handgun, since that is only non supported postion that seems to help me when shooting a handgun.

.30-06 is about as much as I want to bang into my shoulder on a regular basis. The heavier rounds are fun but can really bruise you up!

I like to shoot lots and lots of 300 Win Mag. It is the first round that I really notice any recoil at all. It's lots of fun. I need to try the new 338 Rem ultra mag and see if it is more fun.

Shooting factory ammo, mind you...

375 Super Nitro Express Magnum, preferrably in the Model 70. The 458 WM is just a little much with factory loads. Whoomp! Load it down to 45/70 level w/405gr lead bullets and its like eating candy. No fair though! ;)
