What is the most controlable full auto caliber?

I have the suspicion that bigger is not better in hand held smg and assault rifles. Am I correct? My guesses are 9mm, .223, 22lr, and if you had to choose a battle rifle caliber .308 would be the best calibers for auto fire. Anyone in the know please let me know: whicth caliber you believe to be easiest to control, from what platform(what gun), and what you would compare the "kick" to....

PS The closest I have come to full auto is a hell fire trigger attachment that worked once so any imfo is helpful thanx...
 
It really depends on a lot of factors - the type of gun, weight of the gun, cyclic rate, muzzle attachments, caliber are all factors.

That said, .22 MGs are probably the most controllable. The American 180 (and Yugoslavian MGV176) fire .22 at a rate of about 27-30rds/second depending on the type of ammo. At that speed and with the weight of the weapon, yuo really don't reel the recoil of each round - its more of a very gentle push against your shoulder. Most people consider the .308 G3 to be among the most unpleasant to shoot because of its recoil, but I don't mind it at all. It is difficult to keep on target if you try and dump a 20rd mag all at once, but if you shoot in 2-3rd bursts, I find it pretty reasonable. A friend of mine has a Vito Cellini brake on his G3 and that tames the recoil considerably. Also in the 308 vein, you'l often hear that the M14 has very stout recoil also, but the Italian BM59, although quite similar to a M14, is easy to control due to the brake.

Generally the larger the caliber, the more recoil it will have. The heavier the gun, the less recoil. If a gun has a muzzle brake rather than a flash supressor, you'll probably feel even less recoil.
 
The most easily controlled MG I ever fired was an M2 on a pintle mount on a Humvee. 50BMG recoil is easily soaked up by 5,000 lbs. of gun truck. :D
 
IMO, the suppressed MP5 is the best platform. Absolutely no muzzle climb. Recoil is in a straight line with the barrel, stock and into your shoulder. Just lean into it a little and you can put a 30 round magazine into the center of the target in one long burst.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'd vote the M14 as the worst full auto for recoil. It's a real brute.
 
I would agree with Shaggy, and go for the .22 MGs. HKMP5SD made a very important point, "lean into it". Another factor that I did not see mentioned is body size.
For a battle rifle, I'd say the M-16, 5.56/.223. I've had the misfortune of getting plenty of experience with it in Vietnam. Big or small, if you lean into it, it's controlable.
 
i just had to say.....

the most controllable full auto gun(burst fire included) would have to be........drum roll please bdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdbdb the G-11 without a doubt :D ! Keeping all three rounds of a burst into one hole at 100m :eek: .......Needless to say I want one ;)
 
I got to shoot a thompson today.. not exactly modern, but it shot so smooth... I was in heaven... well, for 2 seconds until I was out of ammo. :D
 
For me, I love the FN P90. 50rnd horizontal magazine, 5.7x28mm SS190s, 900 armor piercing rounds per minute. Almost like firing a .22 WMR, at 900rpm, of course. Fun as hell too.
 
To Many Choices........I'd like to see that! Do I understand you right! Three round burst at 100m and all in the same hole? Unless it was locked in a vice, I don't see how it's humanly possible? The slighest movement/recoil would defeat that statement.
Who did it and where, I'd love to see it done!! Is it on video as a promo for the company?
 
The G11's cyclic rate in three round burst mode was 2000 rpm. Such speed allowed three bullets to be fired before movement or the recoil from the first bullet significantly affected the weapon's orientation.
 
Virtually anything in 22LR. Now, if we're talking centerfire, then its the FN P90. I've fired it but they didn't give me fifty of those itty bitty cutsie widdle bullets.
