Authorities trying to foreclose on a Howard County house found a cache of weapons yesterday that included dozens of rifles and what appeared to be a large amount of military equipment, law enforcement officials said.
The materiel, which included mortar rounds and machine gun parts, was found about 1 p.m. in a house in the 3600 block of Fels Lane, authorities said. The house had previously been occupied by Richmond Laney, 43, who ran unsuccessfully for county sheriff as a Republican in 1994 and 1990.
Authorities said they had filed no charges in the matter, and Michael Bouchard, an ATF assistant special agent, said an investigation was focusing on how the weapons ended up in the house.
"We're running down a lot of different leads," he said. "We'll be working all night trying to find that out."
According to Howard County State's Attorney Marna McLendon, Laney had been held in the county detention center since June 28, serving a sentence for constructive criminal contempt in connection with not making child support payments.
Authorities said he was to be released yesterday on a $2,000 appeal bond, but remained in custody after the search of the house was reported. Lt. Bernard Reiter of the county detention center said police obtained a detainer that returned him to custody. No information about the document could be learned last night.
Authorities said Department of Veterans Affairs personnel who went to foreclose on the house yesterday spotted weapons and called police. The street was cordoned off, and members of county, state, military and federal law enforcement and safety agencies arrived.
Capt. William Rosier of Howard County Fire and Rescue said he saw at least three 81mm mortar rounds, ammunition for grenade launchers that affix to M-16 rifles and parts to machine guns and mortars.
In his last run for office, Laney proposed that deputies be more aggressive about "bringing in people that are wanted on outstanding felony warrants."
