What is the ideal barrel length for

all purpose rifle in 7mm Rem Mag, which may have to be toted a moderate ways through the field - 22" ? Or more or less? In other words, which length is most efficient for this specific cartridge; Or, at what point does the bbl become short enough to negate the large powder capacity of the round, such that you may as well have a 7mm-08? Seems to me with a 20" bbl, 7mm Rem Mag doesn't do more than 100-150 fps better than 7mm-08 for most loads. Also, please factor into the equation that a slightly heavier gun is preferred to minimize the battering of the shoulder for this round. I was thinking 24", provided you're not lugging it too far, or will 22" do everything that 24" will? Or is the entire question of negligible importance?

For cartridges like the 7mm Rem Maggie, longer is better. If you're gonna give up weight, and figure on being a walking hunter, think about the rest of your gear and what you could omit or take less. I carry a half-box of shells, extra, a very sharp pocket knife, some rope and a good bit of toilet paper to mark a trail to where Ol' Bucky's hanging. I drink water before I leave camp; I'll eat when I get back.

I've never figured I was any sort of athlete, or was ever in super great shape. I've toted 9-1/2 pounds of rifle for up to 12 or 15 miles of pretty rough country, although I'm not as ambitious now as in my younger daze.

I dunno. Build up a good accurate package of rifle that'll do what you need. After that, it's nothing more than a serious case of the "want to".

What Art said.

If it be a hunter, you not goin to shoot it very much so I wouldn't worry bout the recoil.

Shoot a dozen or so through a 6 lb 45/70 and then your little gun won't feel so harsh. Even the 338 takes a back seat to a featherweight big bore.

Sounds like a very fun gun.

Sam...follow me, I know a shortcut; bring toilet paper.

Why bother with a bellrin', snortin', powder-hawgin', thunderboomin' belted monstrosity if yer not willing to tote a few more inches of barrel around? If you'd put up with all that, a 30" barrel should be no issue.

The 7mm Rem Mag is what is considered an "overbore" cartridge. This means that there is more case capacity than is efficient for the bore diameter. With this type of round, a longer barrel usually helps ALL the powder burn up to help gain velocity. If weight is a problem, put a lighter conture 26" barrel on it. Extends barrel, saves weight, better balance.
