i have a charles dailey 223 bolt rifle and i only shoot targets. my question is what is the best scope for the money for my rifle. most of my firing is off of bench at 100 yds. i wont to be able to see the bullet holes at that distance. any info. would help. thanks c.j.sikes

Stick to the major brands. The more you pay, the better the optics and coatings for the most part. Same as binoculars. If you want a very good scope, just look at the Leupold line and choose a 3-9x varible. Guaranteed for life. The 3-9x variables are a good balance between cost, magnification, quality, and flexibility. You want to see bullet holes clearly, get a spotting scope and set it up on the bench beside you.

You're gonna make me ask "what's the budget" again, aren't you?

The "best scope for the money" might mean:

-the best scope for your $50
-the best scope for your $75
-the best scope for your $100
-the best scope for your $150
- ditto $200
- ditto $250
-$300
-$350
-$400
-$450
-$500
-$600
-$700
-$800
-$900
-$1,000
-$1,250
-$1,500
-$2,000
-more....

Which is it? Then tell me is that figure including tax/shipping, or not? Then tell me whether or not you're willing to shop & buy used, such as from Ebay? Then tell me whether you WANT/NEED to be able to see your holes with the same scope you're shooting with, or whether instead, you have or will have a spotting scope for that? Then I oughtta be able to give some guidance (my opinions anyway).

you folks have been a lot of help. at present i am using a cheep 3-9 scope, i can see the target but i think the scope is not good enough, i have been looking at lup. scopes but ther is a lot of veration in different modles. price about 300 dollars was what i had in mind. i have a spoter scope that is good and i use it but my son is using a 25-06 with a 4-20 power. at 100 yds he is shooting 5 round group of about the size os a quarter, but my gun 223 is shooting all over the place. my eyes are not that good any more. i am 76 and it does make a difference. thanks for your time. cjs

hmmm, $300 you say? New or used? I'll assume new if you don't answer this time.

Will you ever be shooting at 200 yards, or is 100 yards the maximum? Do you ever shoot in low light, at the end of the day when there are very few on the firing line, as I do, or just in the daytime?

best scope

i have access to a bench on a friends ranch. no one else around . i shoot all times of the day, not any special time. ihave a set up at 100 yds but i could go futher, i do not think so. mostley i lik to try different loads, bullets etc. the interest in the right scope is for addentional scopes for several rifles i have collected over the past 55 years.as to used or new. i am shy on used scopes, but not all together. i have been looking at a lot of them, some are cheap, make me wonder why. i dont have money to throw away, jut need advice on best possibilities. thanks c.j.s.

For 100 yard target shooting with a .223, weight/size not an issue, for $300, I'm gonna say the Super Sniper, either fixed 10 or fixed 16 - I'd probably go with the fixed 10 if shots were limited to 100 yards, but the fixed 16 if shooting at 200 or more:

2nd choices might be one of these:
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/325155M/bushnell_5-15x50_elite_3200_rifle_scope.htm

http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=4094 (a bit on the low side, magnif-wise, but extremely good quality-to-price ratio there, at $255, and can double as an excellent hunting scope)

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/AC10700/barska_6-24x60_swat_extreme_tactical_30mm_scope.htm (if you want a real hoss of a scope - lower quality in general, but bigger objective, higher magnification, and more features like the side focus)

-or maybe a Sightron S2, Swift Premier, Nikon Buckmaster, or Weaver Grand Slam....

The big picture is that you don't need to spend a lot since you won't be shooting at low light, and won't be needing to handle magnum recoil. So you can sacrifice a bit of quality/durability to get a bigger objective and higher magnification. Particularly the bigger objective lens is more important for resolution, and for exit pupil (lack of blackout), for pleasant extended target shooting sessions. Magnif is less important - anything that will get you up to 9 or higher is plenty for 100 yards.

best scope

thanks for the input. it is always good to hear from some one who is well read on a subject. my thing is lead bullets , ishoot all cal in hard cast bullets, have studied thid fo 50 years. lot of fun. thanks cjs

I have been happy with my Leupold 3-9 x 40 VX-II on my 223, but I have to admit that it can be tough to see those tiny holes past 100 yards. The targets that show a green spot when you hit them seem to help a lot.
