I just ordered a CZ 83 Satin Nickel in 9x18 Makarov :D
I will carry this gun and want to know if anyone has chrono'd
various Mak ammo. Please any help would be really really swell.
What is the most potent, accurate, reliable etc...........
Shoot well

Silver Bear 120 gr. (steel?) jacketed HP is reputed to be at 1166 fps. Has anyone tested it.

My Silver Bear 9x18 has been the MOST accurate in my Makarov and the 9x19 145 gr hp has been the most accurate in all of my 9mm pistols. Some claim to have had problems with the Silver Bear but I like it BEST so far.

Otherwise, I have found GoldenLoki data to duplicate what I know of other places.

Try the Fiocchi JHP. I've found these to function flawlessly and are pretty inexpensive ($12/50), which allows you to practice with a carry load.

I have found that the Silver Bear 120gr. HP works well in my Bulgie milsup as long as I recognize certain limitations. Because of inconsistant AOL issues they don't seem to function as well in EG mags as they do in Russian mags. So I always cycle my carry rounds thru my Mak (minus firing pin) to insure reliable functioning with duty magazines. I find this ammo as accurate as any other and it recoils less than the Wolf 109gr but more than the 95gr LVE. Velocity and bullet weight puts my Mak in same class as 125gr 38Spl snubbies and I get more rounds per carry. There are two major drawbacks with this ammo: The AOL issue and the fact that it smells really bad when fired.

You could do worse.

My own personal recommendation for the Mak comes under the heading of "Keep It Mild".

Hornady 95gr JHP may be a .380 grade performer in 9x18 caliber, but it has shown itself to be an excellent performer, and it is very easy to shoot well.

For practice, anything except Wolf 109 grain is just fine.

I've been pretty pleased with the Bernaul hollow points. I fired some into the wet clay mud at my shooting range and was impressed with how well the bullets expanded. They seem reliable in my Makarovs (though not in my PA-63s), and would be my choice for self defense. I also have some Hornady hollow points that cost me about four times as much. I doubt that they are any more effective than the Bernaul at around $5.50/box of 50. Another nice thing about the Bernaul is that they are cheap enough so you can practice with your defense ammo.

Anybody else like the Bernaul? Man they're cheap from dansammo. I was thinking about getting 500 rounds of the hollow points.
