Hello,
I used to be a fisherman, but me and my dad have not caught anything in the past 3 years so we are consedering a swich to hunting. Since the fish kicked our tails, we are going after land animals now.
Neither of us know anyhing about weapons, we just have the thurst to kill. So, whats the best gun to kill deer with? I think we need a rifle, cause a shotgun would just mess up that hide. We need something that is not exorbiantly expensive, but not at the bottom of the list ether. We figured if we get some guns now, we will probably learn to shoot by the time next deer season comes up. When is the next deer season anyway? I'm 20, and my dad is well...old. **** I don't even know how old he is. So we need some full size guns, none of that junior ****. What do you need to get a gun, a permit? I know we needed a fishing permit when we fished.

Hunting is more complicated than fishing when it comes to permits 'n stuff. Especially deer hunting 'cause you have to do the whole tagging thing. You say you're 20. What state do you live in? You might have to do a Hunter's safety course before you're legally allowed to hunt. Here in Tennessee; if you were born before 1969 you had to take a course and get a certificate saying you completed it. I'm 23, so I had to do it. I did it about 10 years ago. I can't help you with your rifle selection 'cause I'm more of a small game hunter. You should try dove hunting. It's loads of fun and if you go to the right field you'll do plenty of shooting.

Look up your states Dept. of Natural Resources online and/or talk to your local Wildlife officer about getting the information your looking for. Most states offer a booklet that will tell you what guns you can use and when to use them. Then go ask your dad how old he is, and report back here tomorrow. ;)

Well if you have a thirst to kill, you have a couple of options, you could saddle up and ride on over to greasespotistan. Plenty of varmints over there that need to be wacked and stacked. On the other hand you could calm down just a touch, and approach the time honored tradition of hunting with just a little less, shall we say, misguided enthusiasm.

That might sound a little funny, my being cavalier about hunting humans, but having respect for deer, right? Well, that is because I have hunted and killed a lot of deer. Most of them killed with a shotgun. I still have their hides. They aren't any more or less damaged than the ones that I have killed with a bow or a muzzleloader. But as usual, I digress.

Deer are worthy opponents. They possess senses and instincts that still astonish me after all my (27) years of hunting them. They are deserving of great respect.

Death-cult fanatics on the other hand are filth to be wiped from the Earth. They, unlike the deer, have a choice of what to be in life. They have chosen to be that which no decent person can suffer to live.

When I was just a little younger than you I sort of had the urge to go at things like hunting with the attitude that you displayed in your post. I don't want this to be preachy, I think that a modicum of aggression is admirable in a young man. All I'm saying is that it doesn't hurt to temper aggression with a little common sense.

In terms of what firearms to use, first find out what is legal where you intend to hunt. Do this by signing up for a hunter education class. You probably won't be able to get a hunting license without passing your hunter ed. class. Have your dad take the class with you. You will have an opportunity to learn proper gun handling, safety, survival, conservation, and a great many other things.

Then practice, practice, practice. You do this so you can put the shot where you need to in order to kill the animal as humanely as possible. That way you save the hide and the meat. Win/win.

Most of all have fun. Enjoy the time afield with your dad. My most precious moments with my own father are times when we hunted and fished together. Last but not least it is called hunting, not "catching'", so don't be too surprised if it isn't as easy as you imagine.;)

Good luck!

2Sniper, Hunting and fishing have much in common. Most of all, if you really want to enjoy either sport you will come to understand that it is about the hunting and fishing, as opposed to the catching and shooting. If you really enjoy the shooting aspect I would suggest either sporting clays or target shooting with your rifle, both of which I enjoy very much and provide a lot of gratifying target busting. As far as your original question regarding deer guns, there are plenty of good choices. A scoped bolt action rifle in 30.06 or .270 would be the generic "do it all" choice. I would add this though. If you haven't been able to catch some fish in 2 years, don't expect a lot of success shooting deer or anything else. Good luck, weagle

2sniper, I hate to say it, but you come across as a troll.

To begin with, I find it hard to believe that experienced fisherman can go without luck for three years. That's foreign to my own experience.

A "thurst (sic) to kill" means to me that you just aren't anybody I want to see own a firearm of whatever sort. That is a bit beyond normalcy.

Taking you seriously, my advice is to hang around experienced folks at your friendly local gun store, and just listen. Don't offer your opinion about anything, just listen. When you want to ask questions, think before asking. Use some common sense--after all, you're 20 years old, and at that age are responsible for having some of that rather rare commodity.

Subscribe to "Sports Afield", "Field & Stream" and "Outdoor Life". Read them thoroughly. Go back to the gun store guys for explanations of whatever you don't understand.

About six months from now, come back for advice on firearms for your purpose, if you still have questions.

Well apparently if one is going after "deers" that must mean the plural of the plural AKA one helluva herd. 120mm Mortar when you absolutely have to kill every %%$^% deer in the herd!

In all seriousness though, don't feed the troll!

Motor cars are sending an amazing number of deer to the great forest in the sky this year in Kansas. Go get yourself an F150 & drive around just at dawn and dusk.

hey sorry bobs-i dont have an F-150 :)-hehe-nissan OK? lol :-p- this could be a troll.. or it could be an unducated man knowing very little about guns and hunting and everything in general-hey 2sniper-read as many posts on here in The Hunt* The Art of the rifle* and any other website u can find

Someof you were helpful. Some of you weren't.

In case you are wondering, my dad is 46.

We live in New Jersey. Any one else here from New Jersey? Or know someone in New Jersey who can help me?

To the guy who philosophized about deers, and said some stuff about Afghanistan. Looks like you spend WAAAAY to much time thinking about deers.

(Paragraph deleted by Art to bring post in accord with TFL rules.)

To the guy who called me troll. I didn't say that we never caught anything, I just said that we never caught anything in the past 3 years. We don't get out that much. This year for example we went 4times. So there.
And as far as hanging out in front of the gun store, i'm in New Jersey, people don't hang around gun stores around here. As a matter of fact I only know of one gun store around here, and its a part of a really large sport department store where we get our fishing stuff.
Reading magazines is probably a good idea, but I'd like to go hunting before i'm my dads age. So here is our plan

1.Get some guns
2.Learn to shoot
3.Kill some deers

I like to keep things simple.
Right now i'm on step one.

2sniper, please do some thinking about how you phrase things, simple or otherwise, and maybeso try again.

This has degenerated beyond my tolerance; thread closed.
