What is plastic fouling ing shot guns?

I was wondering what is plastic fouling in shotguns? I don't shoot slugs out of my gun just birdshot for hunting and clay bird shoots, I clean the gun with hoppes #9 and a patch then run a patch with oil on it, is there more I should be doing? if there is and I don't change the way I clean what can happen? what does plastic fouling cause? Thanks

Plastic fouling comes from the plastic wadding that holds the shot in the shell, it's shot out with the pellets and over time plastic accumulates inside the barrel.

I think what you're doing is just fine, they are some solvents out there that are better at removing plastic fouling but Hoppes works ok.

In the worst case, plastic will continuously build up in the barrel and eventually becomes an obstruction and then you have a grenade in your hands.

Plastic buildup can be seen in the bore, usually just in front of the forcing cone and at the choke, if any.

Hoppe's and elbow grease will do the trick.

A little plastic fouling, from the wadding as pointed out, is fairly normal. It's show up as dark streaks in an otherwise clean bore. It doesn't have to be cleaned out every time (unless you really want to!)

The only problem getting it out is that plastic is fairly inert to gun cleaning solvents. So it's the elbow grease more than the Hoppes that gets it out. Usually a patch won't budge it. I'd suggest that you use a bronze brush to give it a good scrubbing every two or three cleanings.
