What is legal handgun ammunition in Mexico?

I thought it was .38 caliber (which mean't 380, 9mm, 357 sig, 357 mangum, 38 special and 38 super). Later I heard it was 38 special only. Then somebody two weeks ago said it was only .38 Super that was legal. Told me mexican's planning to go back home down south of the border come in the guy's store asking for .38 Super or to order .38 Super. "you got super?"

Isn't there some sort of restriction that you can't have any "military calibers" there?

If so, that'd likely mean 38 special no, 38 super yes, 9mm no, 9mm super (9x23) yes, 45 ACP no, 45 GAP yes, etc.

I agree that the original limitations were "no military calibers" and that was when .38 Super became popular. I "believe" the laws have changed since as many Mexican shooters have told me that .380ACP is the largest caliber handgun they may own.

Of course, we must remember exclusions for who you know and how much "mordida" you can pay but .380 is what they are telling me is the limit for most folks.

uhhhh...

...I thought it was no 45acp because that was the military sidearm...Hell, who knows...maybe they meant it was the USA sidearm...I'm pretty sure that 45acp was a no-no for whatever the reason...There's beaucoup 38super down there and even Colt seems to market towards that end...

I travel to Mexico regularly and have a copy of a Mexican government publication of their firearms and ammunition laws. (written in Spanish of course). Short version, .38 super and .45 ACP are prohibited calibers, as are 9mm Luger, .357 Mag, .357 Sig, .40 S&W. For civilian ownership, the most powerful cartridges allowed are .380 ACP and .38 Special. You can own a revolver chambered for .357 Magnum but you are only allowed to have .38 Special ammo for it. .22's, .25's, .32's and .380's are all common. Yes, .38 Super is popular down there but is a prohibited cartridge for civilians. You can get a permit to bring a gun into Mexico for sanctioned shooting competitions and hunting. Foreigners cannot get carry permits. Carry permits for locals are very rare, but legal ownership of guns is more common than most people think.

In case you are curious, all semi-auto rifles except .22 rimfires are prohibited and in rifle cartridges .223 and 7.62x39 are prohibited. I would have to check to see if .308 Win. has been taken off the prohibited list. (it is on the list in my book but it was published 10 years ago).
