On the barrel is: Hopkins Allen Arms Co. 32 cal. centerfire XL8 Double action Jan. 5, 86'

Can anyone tell me if this is from 1886 and what it might be worth? Thanks matthewalba

You can check gunbroker.com or gunsamerica.com and see if you can find one like it in their search engine. This would give you a sort of base to go by.
Some stores sell the collectors book of gun values, if you can loiter, you can look it up there.

There wasn't any change in the value of the H&A XL Model between the 22nd and 24th (2003) Edition Blue Books.

They were made in .22, .32 & .38 caliber. The book doesn't say when it was made, only that guns made prior to 1896 were marked "Hopkins & Allen Manufg. CO.Norwich, CONN.", and that they made numerous limited production guns and firearms not described in their catalogs. The company eventually became known as the Hopkins & Allen Arms Company, from 1902-1914.
