What is it about this Makarov?

My first Mak--I bought it at a gun show last weekend for $80. It's a Chinese Norinco variant, from what I hear a rather rare example of the breed. It has nice, deep-blue finish, and it makes one ragged hole with fifty rounds at seven yards. I loaded it with CCI Blazer with Gold Dot GDHPs, and somehow I don't feel underarmed. Haven't taken my Glock 19 out of the safe since I tested the Makarov at the range. I don't know what it is, but I really like that little pistol. It is heavy and rather simplistic in design, and the original grips were ugly as sin, but something about holding and shooting it is just extremely satisfying. I put rubber Pearce grips on it, and right now I am carrying it as my CCW gun. Strange things are happening...if somebody had told me that I'd temporarily retire my G19 as my carry gun in favor of a $80 communist manufactured pistol that was designed 50 years ago, I'd have declared you nuts.

Anybody who doesn't own one should go out and grab a Makarov while they are still cheap. I believe that Maks are the best bargains out there by far. They are accurate, reliable and oddly appealing.

I'm tracking one down as I write. With any luck I'll find one soon and my FFL will order one.

I like them. It's a snappy cartridge in an appealing package. I intend to use with summer wear.

So many pistols, so little money.

I had an East German Mak. Only gun I've ever sold (last one I'll ever sell too).

I didn't like the mags although I'm sure someone has made a replacement by now and there was a very limited supply of 9X18 ammo at the time. I'm sure whoever designed it was not too concerned with ergonomics, nonetheless, it is a fairly handy gun. Mine was reasonably accurate and ultra reliable.

Now I wish I had it back.

Bought my first one last weekend, I will be buying a couple more at the next show. Better deal than the $99.00 SKSs when they were around. (and I think the Mak may be more accurate :)

YUP!!! I've never met an SKS yet that can take my Makarov... at any distance. Power is moot if you miss the target!!!!

Makarovs Rising!!!

Take care, ;)

Bought my first one this weekend. It is of the Russian variety. DA trigger is a little long and stiff for my tastes and the the SA trigger has some takeup and over travel, but there is something very satisfying about shooting this pistol. Kind of reminds me of firing my Glock the first time. As I shoot it more, it seems to be getting smoother. It sure isn't pretty, but it is like my Sistema 1927, it works every time and shoots where I point it. Who could ask for anything more? One thing is sure, these weapons from the former Warsa Pact nations ain't purdy, but they are accurate and reliable AND the price is right!

If you're interested in an east German makarov, check out SOG or Empire Arms. I got mine from SOG (Lebanon, OH) last week, and I'm very happy with it. In fact, I then went out and got an extra one, a Bulgarian unissued, to keep the EG in mint condition for my collection. I must say that the Bulgie is not far behind the EG in quality. The EG mak does have a much smoother trigger, and the finish is only slightly better on the EG. The Bulgarian models are commonly found at gun shows, where they should go for about $139. You can actually own a few of them without spending a fortune!

I have had mine ( an orginal Russian Mak) for about 5 years now. I'm not selling mine!!! :) :)

Off my meds (quit smoking), armed to the teeth, and loose on an unsuspecting society!!!

Got my E. German from SOG in Ohio. Didn't shoot it yet, but its a real nice one. IT's a keeper :) Money well spent

Happy Shooting :)

After measuring it a against my HP, I discovered it has basically the same grip angle as the HP. It just seems to naturally fit the hand. Granted the grips are cheap, but this can be fixed. Feels like what I imagine a single stack HP feels like.

lendringser,

I picked up a NIB Feg SMC about three years ago, when it was its turn to flood the western markets.
Though it's only had 350 rounds put through it, it has been reliable and accurate from the start.
No modifications or adjustments.
Though I currently carry a revolver for CC, I have, and will again, tote this little 'gem'.
Glad Eastern Europe had a 'few' to share with the rest of the world... :)
