What is good suplus .308 ammo?

Hi,

I want to know what is good surplus .308 ammo? I have seen the South African .308 battle packs and i dont know of thier accuracy, Is the south African good clean ammo? What are your guys favorite military surplus .308 ammo?

In .308, definitely Hirtenberger, or if you can get hold of it,
Austrian Army surplus .308.

I've seen a definite reduction in quality of RG. I ran some over the chrono a few days ago, and was getting as much as a 150fps variation. Hmmmm.

It is nearly useless to ask someone what kind of accuracy he gets from certain ammo in his rifle when you rifle could be quite different. You might even shoot differently. Do you shoot of a FAL bipod? My FAL doesn't have one. They will shoot differently. You'll have to buy small quantities of each and run your own tests.

I found that Portugese had three-shot groups one half the size of Radway in my 20" Argie FAL, yet my FAL-buddy found that Radway eeked somewhat better groups than did the Portugese surplus in his 18" AzEx FAL.

YMMV, so you better see for yourself.

BTW, I did a 3-shot group with Winchester Supreme Match 168 grain HPBT that measured one inch at 100 yards (same as I got from the Portugese, on average. Part of it is consistant powder, bullet, primer, and case. And part of it is barrel harmonics. The harmonics of the Port in my rifle must have made up for whatever else it lacked.

Take the time to make up your own mind.

FYI British Radway Green shoots best in my rifle. I haven't tried Hirtenberger, though.

Venezuelan has been the worst so far. About 3MOA for me.
