If noise is a problem, the .22 Hornet with today's handloads is good.
There is no reason not to use the "big Guys" of the hot .22s such as the Swift or .22-250.
The .222 or .223 will do fine.
Size of animal and noise if you're near much residential housing seem to me to be the controls.

I guess I want something less than a 222 or 223.
I am really likeing the Hornet or K Hornet...but wonder about brass life.
IS the Hornet good enough for coyotes? How far on coyotes? Not looking at keeping the pelts at this point but might someday...I think if I start going for the hides would use a 17 for close shooting.
But for now want something that is economical to reload and I notice the Hornet uses about 1/2 the powder as a 223.

Reaming to a K Hornet would mean less trimming for proper case length, or so I've read. If you only neck-resize, cases last a long, long time.

Definately go with the 22 Hornet, if you are into reloading make it a K-Hornet, the velocity increase is mostly imaginary, but the round is a bit more accurate because of the shoulder to headspace on.
One factor with the Hornet that most people overlook, it is quite possible to stuff 50 or 60 rounds into your jacket pocket, try that with your 22-250 <BG>
I am currently building my 5th or 6th ( lost count ) Hornet.
I like 'em jes fine <s.

I have always been a fan of the 22 Hornet. It's like shooting a .22LR but with a lot more power at the business end.
I had a little Martini Cadet rechambered for that round and I have used it on varmint with very good success.
But there is nothing wrong with a 222, 223, 22-250, 17, 25-06 or 22 Bee for that matter. Use what speaks to you.
