What is ballistic imaging?

I just read the agrrement with S&W on the HUD web-site.
Ballsitic imaging is the long sought after registration of firearms owners. All guns fired and ballistic print kept on file for tracing through S&W, and the distributor who must maintain your name or be sued?
"It is finished." :(

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

I don't see it as a done deal. There are a lot of issues that I do not think have been settled.

Does the manufacturer have to keep the test fired bullet and case indefinitely so it can be used in comparison tests in some trial at a future indefinite date?

Who will fund and conduct the studies that determine what happens to the gun's "fingerprint" as hundreds or thousands of rounds are fired through it?

By what standards of care will evidence chain-of-custody be maintained so a prosecutor can show a jury the evidence presented in a trial is the same evidence that was collected when the gun was test fired?

These and other issues will have to be funded by some governmental entity.

Do you suppose Smith & Wesson had this in mind when they agreed to the settlement, knowing these issues have yet to be resolved?

Dint these people undrstand that themarkings bullets get from a barrel change as more rounds are fired, particularly if matak jacketed bullets re used?

Hardball,

Are you just recovering from a St. Patrick's day hangover?

What is ballistic imaging? It's jobs for the ATF. Now here is a government agency that was all but dead 10 years ago and now is a overweight giant. As long as congress does not mandate funds to ballistics research and testing, it's pie in the sky. Without money, it is just a bucket of lead and copper.

What we need is a Glock/S&W new barrel exchange. That way you could change your pistol's "fingerprint" right off the bat and screw up their scheme.

I can see their lab rats complaining now, "the rifling matches pretty well, but the extractor and firing pin marks are all wrong."

I heard on MSNBC the other night a short interview w/a Glock spokesman out of GA who said that all new Glocks are now going through this imaging due to Glocks new "get the crimnal" voluntary gun control database in order to be in compliance with the gun confiscators. The last half of that last statement was my own opinion. I think he helped me make up my mind on whether to buy a new Glock. Is there a Gun Manufacturer left who hasn't left their heart in San Francisco? I don't know anything about S& W.
