What is an FAL?

I keep kearing about how good FAL's are and FN FAL's etc. I think I have seen them, but I really don't know what they are.

What are the better variants (there seem to be a lot of brands etc).
What is a good one to buy? How much $?
What makes them so desirable?

Are there any being imported right now that don't cost a fortune?

One of my biggest quandaries is how to find one? I mean, if I am looking in Gun List, do I look for "FAL's" or is that as fruitless as looking for "1911's" without having a brand in mind? Is there a certain brand to look for?

I am not interested in anything over, $1500-$2000 max.

Thanks!

Hit your "Back" button and go to the top of the page, then look at Firearms Photos.

Most of them are great little rifles, and depending on what you get, expect to pay anywhere from $650 to $3000 for one.

Good luck. ;)

You want a FAL that uses the Imbel or DSA receiver, if you're buying new. A complete rifle should cost around $1000-$1500. You can also have a gunsmith cobble one together for you and pick the parts that you prefer.

One of the great things about the FAL is that it's a reliable .308 battle rifle that's reasonably priced and has widely available accessories for dirt cheap (good 20-rnd mags for less than $10).

Preban Brazillian and Belgian guns are outrageously priced.

As to brand FN is the origianl, the rifle was produced I believe in over 93 countries, Imbel and DSA are not OEM, they are aftermarket manu, though Imbel may have been under contract through FN (Belgium) Fabrique National. There is also a newer type FNC which I believe is in 223 cal. Look under FAL maybe mispelled (Fusil Automatic Leger)There are definite differences between metric (STG-58) and standard patern (L1A1, commonwealth countries)
Would get metric if possible as mags are plentiful and very cheap for now.

Very nice these rifles, break down is very easy, can clean barrel from back also. This was original G1 (The Germans wanted it but Belgium wouldnt let them contract it) Mistake by FN as the Germans created the G3 (HK-91) which is cheaper to manu and ended up taking business away from FN.

Imbel is the Brazilian state owned firearms manufacturer. They are as "original" as any other licensed manufacturer of FAL rifles in the 93 countries that issued the FAL as the standard battle rifle. Also, DSA produces their FAL receivers from original FN drawings so they are just as "original" as any other licensed manufacturer. Calling either of these two "aftermarket" is not giving them full credit for producing outstanding mil-spec FAL receivers completely interchangeable with the original FN parts. This is particularly true with Imbel.

See FAL files for general information.

Go buy a supurbly done Imbel receiver/STG-58 (An STG-58 is the Austrian FAL variant) kit gun from one of these guys NOW:

ARIZONA EXPERTARMS

Arizona Response Systems

Why NOW? Because that A$$lkjr Klinton and the f#$%*&& BATF just banned importation of foreign-made receivers and barrels, which most FAL's are based on.

Why these guys? Work done right - just read all the testimonial posts on FAL Files. 'nuff said.
