What is acceptible eye relief?

I am trying to decide which optics to buy for my M96 and one my FALs. Some of the options include the ACOG, Compact ACOG, ELCAN, and various conventional ~1-5x variable scopes.

I noticed that several of the ACOG and Compact ACOG scopes have eye relief of about 1.5", in particular, the Compact 3X has merely 1.4", and the 3.5X ACOG has only 1.5" ! This seems like way too little eye relief. Somewhere between 2.5" and 3.5" seems more normal.

I think the iron sights on my FAL and AR are more than 2.5" away from my eye! I can't imagine moving a scope so far back, let alone the potential for a black eye (the FAL...).

Does anyone know why these two scopes have such limited eye relief?

thanks

Considering how low the recoil is on the guns (5.56 mm Nato) they're intended to be mounted on, and that quick target acquisition is desirable, I'd say that the short eye relief is a plus here. Comments, anybody?

The relief on my Valdada IOR 2.5-10x42 is 3.5 inches. The relief on the Leupold scopes supposedly changes when you change magnification. Must be irritating to establish a good cheek weld.

Yes, RickD, the Leupold Vari-XII's and III's have variable eye relief. The VXIII-2.5-8X I currently have on my FAL is thus. I have it configured so when on 2.5X, the eye relief is proper for just snapping the rifle up.

I believe Leupold's LPS series has constant eye relief.

Acceptable 'eye relief'?

I suppose if I said a blonde, that wouldn't suffice? ;)

I haven't shot a FAL yet, but that is a .308, usually. I would suppose there is a bit of kick there, no?
