What is a good beginners pistol competition

Hey folks just looking for some suggestions on a fun pistol competition to give a try. I am a seasoned shooter 30 plus years shooting. I have had a great deal of training both tactically and practically. I have a very large collection but my fnx 40 and ruger security six 4" are the two guns I would love use for something like this. the ruger because I have been shooting it since I was 5 and it has alot of sentimental value and the fnx just because its the newest to my collection. I dont want to have to spend a ton of money to try something new, and I would love something other than just range plinking and training. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated..If someone has a suggestion of something that requires a different pistol please say so as I most likely have it and would be willing to give it a try, I just was hoping I could find something for the guns mentioned above.
Thanks alot.

Since you said you have both tactical and practical experience I would suggenst IDPA. A pistol, 3 mags, holster and mag pouches are all thats required. Your fnx 40 would be fine to start with. USPSA is also a lot of fun but IDPA is often a little more beginner friendly.

Hi,

you could try either IDPA or USPSA. If you want to know how to get to participate in the game, one of the resources that are available is the PowerFactor Show at http://www.powerfactorshow.com

They go through all the requirements to shooting competitively, covering topics such as range bags, techniques, rules etc.

hope that helps.

Investigate Steel Challenge Matches,,,

Steel Challenge Website,,,

Last year I started doing this a bit,,,
I had more fun with my guns than I've had in a long time,,,
One thing I liked was that I already had several guns that were perfect.

They have many different categories,,,
I chose the rimfire match so it's very inexpensive,,,
All I had to do was buy a few more mags for my Ruger 22/45.

The competitive aura is very apparent,,,
But the people I met were very newbie friendly.

One thing though,,,
Be prepared to get your butt kicked by 12 year old girls with fancy Rugers.

You say you like the Ruger. It would be slow in those Steel Matches and the like, but you might want to look into ICORE (International Coalition of Revolver Enthusiast.) Just get a good holster and some speed loaders and you're all set.

Heck of a lot of fun too.

Action Pistol Groups

Suggestion:
Find a local Action Pistol Group.
These are Less Rule Book Oriented and more Fun Relaxed Oriented.
Usually held during the week due to the folks running them are Shooting
other Stuff on weekends.
These will be just as safe and a great starting point.
There has been one in my Area in NC for years sponsored by a local Indoor
Range and carried on by shooters who now shoot IDPA,SASS,USPSA,MULTI-
GUN and Etc.
Great Starting Point for anybody, including young folks, who want to get into Shooting Sports .

I'd like to get into CMP EIC Pistol and the equivalent NRA Bullseye Pistol

But finding any clubs/matches is difficult, much less anything near Miami, FL (or at least pretending to be near Miami)

IDPA is great for beginners. Some local ranges here have "Fun nights" where they setup IDPA-style courses and inexperienced shooters can get some trigger time other than in a lane.
