What is a fitting?

I am not asking when a gun "fits", but of what a proper "fitting" consists.

Can a shooter tell if it fits in a gun store, with or without the help of a learned fitter, or is that pretty much an educated guess that needs to be worked out on a range or patterning board?

I am recalling what I have read about fitters with tri-fit guns. Do they do their magic with the use of a patterning board? If I am correct, such an enterprise should yield physical characteristics to look for in a particular gun, such as drop, lop, and etcetera, while hefting or even shooting a particular firearm may only tell you that the particular weapon fits you (unless you also know the characteristics of the weapon).

BigJimP just put up a thread about whether or not fit is important and I posted this separately so as not to hijack his, which are two entirely different principles. Whether or not fit is important and just what is a fitting.

An article by a "fitter" that I found of interest is at http://propergunfit.home.comcast.net/~propergunfit/DefinitionPGF.htm

If you want a perfect fit use an experienced fitter with a try-gun. I don't come close to fitting a typical shotgun so getting a properly fitting stock is very mportant to me. Don't confuse 'pattern' with fitting to get to point of aim. Fitting will get you to the 'point of aim' .Then you have to try different chokes and ammo to get a good pattern around that point of aim.If you're an experienced shooter you can tell if the gun fits fairly well .If you're a beginner leave it to a fitter !!
