What if there had been no WW 1?Would the Russian revolution of 1917 have succeded?
The Russian army was busy fighting the Germans which I am sure made a difference fighting the revolutionarys.Would we have had a communist Russia without the war?
Just an idea of mine.WHat do you think?

A very interesting premise, beemerb. I don't know enough about it to make any kind of intelligent comment though. (Not that it's stopped me before.) ;)

I'm gonna transfer this over to General where I think it fits better and will also get more responses.

There is a whole newsgroup for such discussions.

Search for soc.history.what-if or something like that.

They go over every situation imaginable and even have a faq on the common ones.

Like:

Rome doesn't fall
Alexander doesn't die
Hitler wins in Europe
The CSA wins

etc, etc.

So the Russian army is tied up with the German problem, their economy is strained and they are ripe for revolution ( two of em in quick succession ) Socialism had been wandering around the world without finding a good landing place. Tho America was already well on the way to the Big Government by the 1860s.

By this line of thinking we could blame world socialism/communism on the Germans. I don't have a problem with accepting that idea. No wonder our government agencies resemble the Waffen SS and our Kommander in heat thinks he is a feurher. The Germans not only started the whole mess, they seem to enjoy wallowing in it. With exceptions of course but as a whole they seem to take solace in lack of individual responsibility and heavy government control.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

If there had been no WW-1 then the corporal with the paint brush mustache would have never brought his National Socialist Nazi party to power...no WW-2, no millions killed because of his dispicable hatred, no extermenation of Jews in concentration camps.
Instead it did happen. History has a way of repeating itself if ignored by another generation of socialist breed who are the usual fuzzy thinking trouble makers that get things stirred up. Wake up America, don't let this happen to our country. Stop it before it happens again. The same evil formula is slowly being repeated...damn...can't you see it coming.

I think russia was still ripe for revolution. It may have taken longer, but it would have still happened. But imagine if there had been no communist take over. No WWI, JamesE is right. There would be no WWII. But also, no Korean war, Maybe no communist China, no cuban missile crisis, no space race, no red scare, no afganistian, possibly even no vietnam conflict. How different would our world be with no cold war to direct us. Would we have bothered to land a man on the moon?

Is it possible that there wouldn't have been a "Roaring-20's", no prohibition, no Al Capone, and no NFA?

No Roosevelt, no Atomic bombs, no...

"[Even if there would be] few tears shed if and when the Second Amendment is held to guarantee nothing more than the state National Guard, this would simply show that the Founders were right when they feared that some future generation might wish to abandon liberties that they considered essential, and so sought to protect those liberties in a Bill of Rights. We may tolerate the abridgement of property rights and the elimination of a right to bear arms; but we should not pretend that these are not reductions of rights." -- Justice Scalia 1998

Hey, Correia:

I know of Harry Turtledove, wrote the time travel thingy...dudes go back to the civil war with AK47s...pretty wild.

Just got a book from History Book Club on this very subject. "The Pity of War" by Niall Ferguson, 1999, Basic Books, New York. May be a bit before I read it, but one of the main propositions is that had Britain never involved itself in WWI, the war would have been short, and obviously Hitler never would have gained power... (I believe arguements such as this are called "counterfactuals" among historians.)

Those who enjoy counter-factuals might wish to read the book "What if? The world's foremost military historians imagine what might have been." Includes historians such as Stephen Ambrose, John Keegan, David McCullough, and others. There are three essays related to WW I.

Anybody remember that Twilight Zone where the tank crew finds themselves (and tank) back in time just prior to Little Big Horn?

Where are you, Rod?
