What has happened to the handgun market?

For a time handguns on GB were selling like hotcakes, and now most guns have zero bids on them. Has the market gone south or has the Obama mania ebbed....what is your take on the handgun market these days?

People lost their jobs after spending their savings on guns and now there's a flood of em back on the market. Just a guess.

Before Obama got elected, I bought two guns. Most of us did the same. Now, we have most, if not all of the guns we've wanted..........and no ammo!!!

I'm sure all the dealers out there knew that after the gun boom thee was going to be a gun bust. Things will be slow for a little while, especially if you're trying to sell the latest greatest plastigun.

There's a number of factors at work (and no, it isn't just handguns- rifles and ammo are also involved, even though it seems the shotgun world has gotten off lightly).

1) Obama panic. This seems to have been in three waves, the first after the election, the second with the inauguration, the third when Holder started mouthing off. This was the overriding driving force behind all of this, but by now if people were fearing immediate bans, they've already bought their guns (probably overpaying). Since it appears that a new AWB is far from a priority for the While House and/or Congress, this is dying down.

2) Money. We are still in a recession. There's only so much money out there looking for product. The glut of dollars entering the market over the past seven months was finite, and when combined with #1, I think many of those who were more panicky have run out of cash. Those Bushmasters being sold for $1600 weren't the investment the buyers thought.

3) Satisfied market. When people have what they want, they quit looking. Even if folks don't trust Obama and still have money, at some point they'll have what they want (at least in the near term). Even if you aren't broke yet, there's a limit to the number of new guns you can really play with. Supply has finally began to satisfy demand, and we're going to rapidly be back to pre-panic supply levels in many areas of the firearm market.

 Yeah, don't think thats the reason. Like most "hypes", they all tend to die, people wake up and realize that what they heard was a bunch of flub, it happens quite frequently. y2k,bird and swine flu, guns and ammo everytime a democrat gets elected, terrorism...etc.

Boom and bust. Hopefully the handgun market has fallen off a bit and ammo should follow. Everyone knew that sooner or later, Obama Gun Grabbing mania would die down. So long as he doesn't re-start it, I'd expect that handgun sales will more or less get back to pre-Obama sale levels.

I'm already back out hunting good deals.
There are some really good deals if you look hard and more showing up each day.
I think most of the Obama crap is played out and now folks are calming down.
The ammo shortage is dying down where I an at - Texas. Most stores have placed limits on how many boxes you can buy at once and that has bade a big difference.
The whole ammo shortage was caused by a primer shortage. Primers are hand made and when a person is involved you can only speed up so fast and in primer making there is no room for error. Ammo was flying off shelf's faster than primers could be made. Thus a shortage.
I've had that confirmed by three major ammo and component manufactures so I confident in that statement.
Primer production is catching up and more ammo is coming out of the factory's .
If you can't make a pop, you don't get a boom!:D

Another reason: some sellers haven't caught on that demand is falling off rapidly, and still insist on starting their auctions with absurdly high minimum bids and reserve prices. They are actively preventing their auctions from selling in some cases. Back when everything was out of stock at the reputable Internet vendors, they could get away with this, but those days are rapidly vanishing.

I agree with the OP that there are a lot of guns that aren't selling. It shows up on the auction sites and at local stores. I recently sold a handgun for significantly less than my original asking price. A question of timing, I have no doubt that I could have commanded a higher price had I put it on the market 3 or 4 months ago.

I also agree that this is the natural consequence of the end of panic buying plus the reality that we're in a severe recession. Discretionary cash just isn't as easy to come buy these days as in bygone years.

Finally, I notice that the ammunition market is beginning to loosen, perhaps significantly. I just received an order from an internet site that had been showing everything sold out/no backorders for months. I also just received notification from Cabelas of shipment of an order that I'd made months ago and that I'd totally forgotten about! I wonder what other orders I made back during the panic, that I've forgotten, and that are going to show up on my doorstep? Hopefully, not something in a caliber that I no longer own!:o

Those Bushmasters being sold for $1600 weren't the investment the buyers thought.

I can't wait till December. That's when I'll buy my NIB Bushmaster for $700 or less. There will be thousands of them listed on GB by then with no bids cause little timmy is going to need a new red rider for christmas.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of the nation's major firearms makers fell Monday on analyst concerns that the postelection surge in hand gun sales may be coming to an end.

Both Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. and Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. declined following an article in the business publication Barron's, which suggested that the companies could see slowing consumer demand for their firearms.

The news dragged stocks lower, but it wasn't completely unexpected, said Cai von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen and Co.

"This has been the concern ever since the gun sales started to pick up," he said in an interview.

Sales began to rise following the November election of President Barack Obama on fears that a Democratic candidate would impose stricter gun control laws.

Shares of Smith & Wesson, based in Springfield, Mass., fell 27 cents, or 4.48 percent, to $5.76 in afternoon trading.

Southport, Conn.-based Sturm Ruger shares traded down $1.10 cents, or 8.63 percent, to $11.64.

I think some buyers have finally come to their senses - but the speculators are getting hurt finally by not being able to unload some of the excess inventory they bought just to gouge someone down the road with a 100% gain - and I'm glad ....

Its time for reasonableness to take over ..... ( but easy for me to say, I have all the guns I want ..).

It's good news to those of us who buy firearms because we want to shoot them and keep them forever. It's bad news to people who saw the panic after it started and bought some guns thinking they would continue to rise in price. It seems like the price and shortages first hit the semi auto rifles such as the AR and the like, but semi auto pistols followed hand in hand. But it even hit the revolvers that I like, mainly SA large caliber handguns like Blackhawks and such. It is kind of amusing to see some things on Gun Broker these days. For instance, I noticed at my local gun dealer he has a brand new Blackhawk in 41 magnum for $415. He's had it for quite awhile too and his prices have always been pretty fair. I'm kind of tempted at that price but haven't done it yet. But I see on Gun Broker there is no way you can buy anything similar for less than $475 and then I would have to pay for shipping and an FFL transfer fee.

Anyone who thinks they got a "raw deal" because they purchased a few firearms and paid maybe a couple hundred dollars more than you could have if Ted Nugent was our President really needs to think again.

A "raw deal" would have been not doing anything and getting screwed by the Obama Administration. At some point, we are going to get a royal screwing. Better get what you want now, and ammo too. Because it's not going to be business as usual forever.

Right now, there are a number of excelent military style rifles and large capacity pistols available for purchase. Much of this stuff is excelent quality, better than what we were able to get even pre-89 import ban. These are the Golden Years of gun ownership.

You are not going to see anything better than the FN SCAR, SIG 556, MSAR, AR15, PTR-91, KRISS or even the AK US built rifles that you can get right now. There is just about nothing worth having that you can't get right now that isn't as good or better than what was being imported prior to '89.

The larger capacity pistols are also of exceptional quality. Sig's and CZ's are in abundance. STI large capacity 2011's - nothing like that was available pre-89.

The bottom line is that there is some top-notch firearms available for purchase RIGHT NOW. It will not get any better than this. My suggestion is that you buy GOOD TOP QUALITY firearms now and lots of ammo to go with them, when the ammo demand eases up a bit. Also, buy EXTRA BARRELS!!! Magazines too, but don't forget to have extra barrels and spare fire control parts, if you can get them. I bet that there will be legislation to regulate drop-in barrels and re-define them as firearms, or possibly require that all new ones be registered like silencers.

You don't need to panic. You have a little time to get what you want. My only advice is: dont' buy junk. Buy top quality guns. You will be better served in the long run to purchase the cream of today's crop than cheap hi-points and pot metal guns.

Thanks for the insights....it makes sense. I thought I might thin the herd and sell an HK P30, but now think I will just hold what I have.....it would be a good time to buy if you got extra cash and looking for a good deal.

From some of the prices I noticed on GB in the past few weeks, . . . I almost quit going there, . . . figured I'd get charged $$$ somehow for just looking.

Ugh, . . . nasty prices!!!

May God bless,
Dwight

I'm hunting an XD45 and saw two adds today that are $100.00 less than 2 weeks ago.The bubble is coming down and there will be some bargains come this fall.
Those that bought large inventories will have to unload them or carry them forward into the next year with the new and improved models coming out and prices falling for older guns. That will not apply to all guns but a good majority.
Time to go bargain hunting is approaching fast!!!!:D

I've noticed that prices of machineguns have been dropping as well. Anyone familiar with the NFA community knows that most of these folks fail to believe that NFA prices can go down.

Prices should come down a bit more....especially on used guns.

The only thing I'm running into finding is the .40 s&w SD rounds. Preferably Gold Dot's. But I haven't found much of anything. Locally anyway.
