what handgun can take any animal?

OK, not thinking whale but is there a handgun that is capable of taking any living animal like the largest bear, Rhino etc? Basicly a hunting gun you could use for anything you would possibly encounter.

a 385grain .50 sabot at 1900ft/sec is delivering over 3K ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle and over 2300 at 100 years. How does that compare to big game rifles like the .600 NE? Is it enough to take an elephant etc? sorry thts a shot gun round, confused this with my other thread.

Every game animal on planet earth has been taken with the .44Mag, including the African Big Five (now six including hippo). Although most would prefer a little more gun. A custom five-shot .45Colt or .454 at the least, the .475Linebaugh being the best penetrator.

the the 475 more effective then the .500SW mag?

Pretty sure an 8 inch S&W 500 can take anything that walks the earth, although for something like an elephant, Rhino, hippo or any dangerous type of large wild animal, you would have to be really close and put the bullet in the right spot. Really dangerous, but 700 potential grains of bullet has got to be lethal to anything.

You would be just plain crazy to attempt something like that, although it could be done.

understood. It is really more about knowing the gun has the ability then it ever actually being used. I have a few handguns and rifles and like to buy diff things. I have a FiveseveN, .45,9mm, heavy barrel AR, 12 gauge etc. I am interested in buying another nitch handgun just to have something that could stop anything anywhere for any reason.

The .475 is definitely more portable and usable (especially if you don't have huge hands). The S&W is a massive gun, in my hands it feels like someone wrapped Houge grips around a 2x4. The .475 Linebaugh uses a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk frame.

Comparing the .500 Linebaugh to the .475 Linbaugh the .475 has more penetrating power, and is better for dangerous (thick skinned) game. Not sure how the .475 stacks up against the .500 S&W, but I know which one I'd rather use.

Just from innernetz rumor and posted pics of dead critters being overshadowed by their hunters and hand-cannons, I give my vote to the .475 being the most effective big critter stopper.

I read an article in a magazine 15 or 20 years ago about an individual who took a 5 shot custom .50 caliber cartridge revolver to Africa; and went hunting Cape Buffalo. He stalked in close and took one down with one shot. I can't remember who is was or what the ballistics were. I do remember the ballistics exceeded the energy of any .454 Casull.

I did find this article from 2004 wherein it tells about taking an elephant and a cape buffalo.

To Africa with a .500 S&W

Browning Buckmark / Ruger MkIII or 22/45 - in .22 LR.

OR

If you have lots of ammo, and spare magazines: The 2mm Kolibri

If you have doubts; talk to the ivory poachers in Africa. .22 LR is their favorite cartridge.
