What handgun caliber would you rather never hear about again?

Mainstream
.40 S&W (buy better 9mm ammo or just get a 45acp)
Niche
.45 GAP (a solution without a problem)
.327 Magnum (unless it's in a 6 round snubbie)

Also, any gauge shotgun beside 12, 20 or 410!!!!

Let's go wildcats...

The common wildcats like 9x23Winchester, .356TSW, 9mmMarkov, .38Super, etc.
If these "powerful" handgun calibers worked the way they were designed or marketed more firearm owners, PDs, military units, etc would use it.
Some wildcats have merit but as the late Richard Crenna tells Sly Stallone's John J Rambo at the end of First Blood(1982); "It's over, Johnny."

Ed,

I don't think you have to worry about the .327. Sadly (IMO) it's time has come and gone before it's time came. I doubt we'll be seeing any more .327 guns or even ammo for that matter.

Any caliber that anyone claims is a "sure one shot stopper".
Any caliber anyone claims is "king".
Any caliber that anyone claims makes all others not even worth carrying.
Any caliber that I don't own. :D
.22 LR
.25 Auto
.32 S&WL
.32 Auto
.380 Auto
.38 Spcl.
.357 Mag.
.357 SIG
9mm
.40 S&W
.45 ACP
.45 LC
.410
12 gauge

.17 HMR,,,

When I saw my first revolver chambered in this cartridge,,,
My first reaction was one word,,,
Why?

I know there are people out there who love this cartridge,,,
But I can't help but think it's a round with one purpose,,,
And the purpose was not to fill a need for shooters,,,
But for selling un-reloadable cartridges.

They don't do anything a reloadable cartridge doesn't do better,,,
If I'm reading the ballistics charts correctly,,,
They don't really outperform a .22 Mag.

I'm mentally bracing myself for all the outraged posts from the aficionados of this cartridge.

Again, I just say,,,
Why?

The only truly reasonable answer is,,,
Why not?

.40 S&W, I'm really tired of hearing about how its the best of both worlds. IMO its the worst of both worlds.

i think that the more variety the better, there is no such thing as a usless cartrige as long as somebody enjoys shooting it.

and 9mm makarov is not a wildcat but a milsurp cartridge.

christcorp,

I'm just going to throw this out there, but the .40 is definitely NOT a niche caliber.

I'm not a .40 fanboy, but I do enjoy the one gun I have chambered for it. Anyhow, point is, when as many agencies use .40 as they do, it has certainly transcended the "niche caliber" realm.

ETA: I forgot to give my input on the calibers that I hate. None of them. I'm not bothered by the existence of any caliber. Sure, I think the .45gap is silly, but if the companies want to make it and people like it, fine by me.

Get rid of .327 and .41

We can keep .357 and the .44 magnum :D

------------------------------------------

In autos toss out the .357 sig and 10mm too
as we got the BIG 3 9mm, .40 and .45

None that I can think of. There are rounds that I don't care for or understand but for me to give a hoot if someone else wants to like em and talk about em.....come on. Maybe some should open their ears and their minds to learn something. Is a caliber a niche round? So what. I see a list of cartridges here that are very good at what they do and better at everyday things than many of the so-called "good" calibers. On the list I see many great cartridges that to ignore would be stupid. Others on the list are so obsolete and never talked about that to dislike a conversation about them is a mute point. Can't complain about threads or discussions on a caliber that never See's a thread or discussion. I can see advantages and disadvantages to all the cartridges listed.

LK

I can't say either or any of them. EVERY caliber teaches me something about ballistics, recoil, reloading ease, stopping potential. To dismiss any old or new concept in caliber as useless, deprives one of a learning opportunity.. Researching facts, dispellng myths, looking at new approaches in any given caliber, provides challenges to the mind, renews that fresheness to shooting, which one remembers of his/her first experience of firearms. Never stop learning.

With seemingly new guns coming out daily? Smith (albeit pricey), Taurus, and especially Ruger all have an array of guns out in. Look for an LCR, I bet, maybe even a Single Six, maybe a Marlin or Rossi lever? How many more and what guns do you want? Looks pretty good to me so far for a yet fairly youngin' round that unluckily happpened to try to get intro'd/marketed amidst a bad ammo year. And ammo (finally) starting to trickle in? The round is yet young--give it a chance.

To those bashing the so-called niche rounds, what do you find so threatening about them? And to the poster who said he was tired of hearing how the .40 is the "best of both worlds," it's the worst of both worlds," similarly why so threatened? And, btw, it IS in many ways the best of both,... look at the math, the gel and the stop records.
All in all, some interesting responses.

Yea this is most definitely a post where you don't think too much into it, at all...because there's nothing to think about, except the question at face value.
