In Time Enough for Love, when Lazarus had himself time sent back to, where, 1917 Missouri? he at one point geared up to skip out on participation in The Great War. He outfitted himself with a Colt .32 revolver amongst other items. He later ditched this and a box of ammo when he changed his mind.
When first I read this, I thought it odd that Heinlein had chosen this particular revolver for Lazarus. Given that it would be difficult to conceal a big handgun while headed for Mexico, he could still have had a .380 pocket auto. Heinlein had already written Beyond This Horizon featuring the Colt .45 automatic. At least a Police Positive .38 with short barrel.
Thinking back to specific weapons references -- The central character in Farnham's Freehold had outfitted his bomb/fallout shelter with several guns--One was a Thompson Submachine Gun, and there was some little rifle they used to set off a fertilizer explosive--I seem to recall a .22 magnum but may be confabulating that one.
There was another Thompson mentioned in
Glory Road, but only when Oscar wistfully acknowledged that he couldn't take it on a particular quest.
Gotta go back and read Number of the Beast. Read it in a hurry when it was first published and it may be the only RAH bok I've never re-read.
Best,
RR
