What gear to fight Aliens [with Ms S. Weaver]?

I disagree about the power suit. They died by bugs in the book too. If the alien can shred the robot, it can shred the power suit. How about the wandering gatling gun from the punisher armories? It was a motion detector, r2d2 type bot with a mini gun built into it.

Run Janet Reno through a food processor and put the juice in a super-soaker.

Yes the suits of the HMI [Heavy Mobile Infantry]. Problem is RAH never said much about their weapons aside from flamers and pony nukes [shoulder fired nuke's as I recall]. The sensors and etc of the suit would be helpful as would the speed...should be able to outrun the aliens if need be.

Bugs killed MI in the books, too, yes...but if you read carefully the bugs had weapons.

That damn movie really cheesed me off. I wondered how they would handle the very conservative political philosophy of the book. I figured they would ignore it. Nooo...I forgot how Hollywood deals with such things- they just turned it into a farce.

As to bug-hunting with Ripley? Take a page from her own book:

Nuke 'em from orbit.

Coronach: I agree with you about the movie version. I noticed that they totally ignored the issues the book addressed. Not one word in the movie about personal responsibility.

Well at least RAH didn't have to see it...though I wish he was still around.

"...shines the name, shines the name of Roger Young!"

PS I also am offended that they did not mention Roger Young in the credits [unless I missed it] who was awarded CMH posthumously in WWII.

After seeing the movie, (and being a bit disappointed - for a variety of reasons) I assumed it was made and released when it was because RAH would never have approved it had he still been among the living.

I can just see it now, with the Queen Alien confronting Reno. The Queen's only line would be "Damn! She's ugly! No way I'm implanting one of my precious babies in that thing!"

This confrontation would also answer the question of whether aliens could puke.

Throw Rosie O' in with Reno for the icing on the cake, At least it may go blind and choke on it own puke :D

Hmm Vs. the Aliens. Anyone here ever Seen Warhammer 40K? I would have to go with the Terminator Power armor from this. Armored better than a tank and armed with what is basicly a 20mm Gattling style gun and a Huge Close combat weapon. (Yes I still play Sci-Fi Tabletop war games so sue me) Of course if we are talking only real modern day weapons I would have to vote for a Tactical Nuke or fifty. No way I am taking a chance on even one getting away.

Me and my Leatherman Micra and a garbage can lid w/reno from cover of Newsweek taped on!

Game over, MAN! Game over!

Question is, Do they have acid for puke, too?
anodes.

I dont know - those MG-42s did pretty danged good...

But I agree most with lendringser's comment about the Starship Trooper Mobil infantry...
(Not the Movie version) They would do Very Well.

Even Better - the Scouts from the book titled "ARMOUR" which is rather Starship-Trooprsish... But in my opinion better. Power Armour in there - but add in some bombastic gold plating and Katanas...
One of my favorites.

Hey - Shin... You read that book - who's the author?

Mr Hill,
The author is John Steakley. I have the book in front of me and I agree, good story

That sounds like the man!

Great book...

Love that book - one of my all time favorites.

In case you get up early, there is a Star Ship Trooper animated show on the Sci-Fi network. It's computer generated and a little more exciting that the movie.

There are some rather large mecha. The skinnies are in it. The bugs still are basically wave type opponents with some spitting acid and flame.

They are not the technological bugs of Heinlein.

The MI wears a power suit of less power than the books.

As far as their small arms:

1. It is not clear if they are energy weapons or projectile. They have acted as both. There is an underslung grenade launcher.

2. There is no conceptualization of indirect fire weapons and the MI is dropped into swarms of bugs and have to shoot it out.
They are always outnumbered.

3. There is no aimed shooting, it is always
from the hip. I get a feel that it would
have been hard to animate the latter.

4. The MI are the worst shots in space. They spray rounds all over the place.

5. The impact of a single round is nil. Bugs need multiple hits. They would be better off dumping the rifle part and using the grenade launcher exclusively.

The hero - Johnny Rico is one of the most stupid and obnoxious characters. He should
get eaten.

As far as fighting these kinds of exo-skeleton dudes, you need:

1. Something to shield you from the acid.
2. A one shot high impact round that crunches through the armour and explodes. They have too much resilence to let them bled out.
Hosing them for a few seconds with an SMG takes too long.

I watch the cartoon every day. Record it the days I can't. I like Rico in the cartoon better. I like the fact they use the drop suits. I guess that would have been hard in the movie. They definately don't touch the politics in the cartoon at all, at least in the movie they spoke breifly about it. I am waiting for the new season, they have gotten to the point where they made him the new LT.
I have learned to accept some short comings because it is a kids morning cartoon. Guess we should talk to the anime guys and get them to make us a real series.

As for fighting aliens, Glenn is right, has to be a one shot one kill type thing. The bloop guns come to mind. If we are talking todays tech. I imagine more of the full auto shot gun with explosive rounds. That is each pellet is explosive rather than slugs. Or the BFG9000 would be nice too.
