In a nutshell...I wish all this titanium/scanadium/etcetera-ium, rubber grip, light pipe sight stuff would just go away. Bring back the real M-19, M-27, M-25, M-24, M-17, M-48! :barf:

The M66 came with perfectly useable target stocks...haven't seen a need to change 'em.
The M638 came with Uncle Mikes rubber grips.....swapped 'em out immediately for quality smooth, non-clothes grabbing, rosewood concealment grips.

A sporting gun is good made out of carbon steel and blued..... I'd rather have a stainless carry gun.

IMO, Smith should have left the parts and the mechanism as it was...... There were no problems....... Why change it?

The Good...

1. Rubber Hogue & Uncle Mike's grips, and those "Mickulek" grips
2. Lightweight, strong materials

The Bad...

1. Rediculously heavy trigger pulls (even on some PC guns!)
a) MIM parts w/no hand fitting
b) Intergral locks
c) Lawyers!
2. No polished blued steel guns (except stupid-high priced PC guns)
Too many grit blasted (read cheaper) finishes. Damn, those titanium cylinders are ugly!

I agree with C.R. Sam above. Once upon a time everything S&W made filled a valid niche; and within that range they would oblige you with some nice little touches. Now the catalogue is full of stuff I could't care less about.

Hell, I can't even keep the numbers straight, let alone the screwy Performance Center products. :barf:

Individual features I like...wood and rubber grips..both are good
All stainless and blued guns. I do like the frame mounted firing pin. I hate the thought of having a lock let alone actually having one. I dont like the heavy trigger...but its smooth. Ill give it that much...s/a is very nice..it just breaks! I wish for the triggers of old, like a good 66 or 28 thats worn in...ya know? Smooth light and perfect.
I like the style of some of todays smaller guns...the heavy full lug barrel on the 1 7/8" and other thing. But I want the mechanical quality of the guns I USED TO have. Just MO...thats all.
Shoot well

I like everything about the 342PD except the inside lock, which may as well not be there (it will never be used in my lifetime).

I like the new guns. I like the old ones more.

It's how I like a '57 Bel Air or a '49 Ford.

But I also like some of the new cars.

I don't see MIM as anything to be concerned about.

The frame mounted firing pin isn't that bad.

I miss blued revolvers. We shouldn't have to buy Performance Center guns to get a blued revolver.

The could also s&*tcan the fancy aluminum cases and lower the price.

A buddy of mine bought a PC 8 shot 627 snubby. It is a real gem of a handgun. A lot of precision. Nice, but pricey. Dump the case, lower the gun $100.

Quality is getting more consistent. Most of the leftover Schultz "rush jobs" are gone.

More models.

Why don't they make an L frame 45acp revolver, maybe 5 shots and a 3 inch barrel? I'd sure as hell buy one.

I think that S&W, like many companies, has fallen prey of the "If we don't change it, they will stop buying" syndrome. It happens.

Does anybody remember "New Coke"? And now we have "Coke Classic".

As to locks. The new owners bought S&W to sell locks. They make locks and this way they are assured that they have at least ONE customer, EVEN if the laws change and say they are unnecessary.

I predict that you will never see another lockless S&W even if all the stupid gun laws get repealed.

I don't do business with companies that endeavor to eviscerate the Bill of Rights. I'll buy used Smith & Wessons, but won't even consider buying a new one until the company repudiates its deal with the Snopes Clinton-Liar Gore régime.

MIM parts...

I have a broken mag release for my Kimber Ultra Carry. Some MIM parts break in half when they're not supposed to.

It's amazing how the magazines no longer stay in when the mag release cracks in half during shooting...

LIKES/DISLIKES

Regarding C.R. Sam's post: The government controls ALL companies (food, oil, mining, etc., etc.)!!

Also, what's not to like regarding the integral lock?

I personally like wood grips the best.
