What exactly do they do to AKs.....

What do they do to the newer AK models I hear are coming out that only accept 10 round mags? Do they only "legally" accept 10 round mags or is there some physical castration done to them?

Some of the newer ones only accept these PC new sinlgle stack AK mags, and won't accept normal AK mags. Don't buy one. There are PLENTY of normal AKs out there.

The magazine well is thinner than the standard AKs. The Russian Saigas appear to have a reconfigured magazine catch, but retains the standard sized magazine well.

If you sent it to a good AK smith, he could recut the magwell and trunnion to accept standard AK mags. It would probably be less expensive to simply buy a standard AK.

I have one of those single-stack Romak's. I saw it, felt sorry for the Romanians (you ought to see their idea of "appealing consumer packaging" ;) ), and bought it. What the hey, it was only $200. If you want to go to jail desperately, the sheet-metal receiver allows conversion to double-column mags in 20 minutes with a Dremel Tool or less than 5 with a pair of tin-snips and a crowbar...

The idea of "gunsmithing" and "AK" in the same sentence still gives me the giggles. With these things, it always feels more like "blacksmithing"...

LOL! As a die-hard AR man, I've always felt the same way. :) If you are going to go the AK route, go all the way and get the best one available:

This is my Gordon Tech SLR-100H. It has a milled Bulgarian receiver, Hungarian parts that look brand new and surplus Russian wood that gives it a great vintage vibe. All for less than $500.00! I couldn't pass it up.

Assuming that you 1 get rid of the pistol grip and 2 exchange some imported parts for US parts, you can then change your rifle to accept high cap mags legally, as long as the mags aren't altered.
