What else can I get besides the Mini-14?

Of course I'm lucky enough to live in the great state of CA! I'm just getting into shooting and I am trying to find a nice semi-auto target rifle. I've been doing a little research and the mini-14 looks like about it! At least in my price range, which is $500-700. Also, are all mags over 10 rounds for the mini illegal in CA? What if they were owned before the ban? Thanks guys!

Josh

Things like the mini-14 and 30 are about all you can have in the wonderful state of Kalifornia. IF you did not have a magazine that is more than 10 rounds prior to 1/1/2000 you cannot buy it.(at least, that is what the law says) This applies to all rifles and pistols.
All AK and AR clones are banned, even if they do not meet the "Assault weapon" criteria.

DPMS makes(or at least they used to) a pump version of the AR, i don't know if that falls under the ban. The DPMS pump used regular AR mags and everything but wasn't semi-auto. I don't know if that would skirt around the ban.

I think you need to sneak next door to AZ and snag a few real mags at a gun show. Once you have them, a Mini 14 will do just fine. :)

M1 Garand. M1A. I'd take either of those before a Mini-14. Though the M1A is significantly more expensive (~$1200 and up).

M1911

i juast got myself an M1A loaded...
But WOW- that accuracy international remington 7400 is awsome. ANyone have one, id like to know more about it.

Bowser's link--Remington 7400

I agree with Shin Tao, those rifles look great. And from the price list, it looks like you could upgrade a little at a time, starting with ten round mags for $29.95. I was thinking about a Mini-14 or 30, since I live in California too, but now I want to see one of those 7400's in 30'06.

I wish I was on comission!

Anyone know if it is legal to put a pistol grip (no folding) on a Rem 7400??

Bowser.

I think I am going to have these guys build one for me. But I'm going to see if I can have mine based on the pump action model.

Those rifles make my Mini-14 look...unworthy...

Something about these rifles makes me think of the old BAR. The proto-SAW not the hunting weapon.

I hate using the phrase, but these guys are thinking outside of the box!

just goes to show how resourceful people can be, very interesting site. however not a good option for CA as the 7400 is a semiauto that is only available because it does not have the pistol grip.

g6t60 - you say target semi but you're considering a mini-14  , i think you might be better off with a sks with its 10rd mag (50% more than mini's standard) and reload with stipper clips. stock models of each gun have had comparable accuracy experience (oops, forgot disclaimer: russian or romanian sks...not the chinese)

on the other hand, i have shot some wonderfully accurate browning bars... the hunting weapon not the SAW

Let's be clear about one thing. The Mini 14 is a fun rifle, but it is not a "target" rifle. You'd be better off with an M1 Garand, Winchester 100, Browning BAR, H&R, Remington or other "hunting" type semi-auto in your price range. If your emphasis is more "target" than semi-auto, there are lots of bolt action guns in .223 Rem which will serve you well. Another alternative might be to go with a .22LR rifle in semi-auto. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for all the replies!! I guess maybe I used the wrong word in "target" I'm looking for a rifle to take out and have fun with. Probably won't be shooting anything over 100 yards. I have been looking at the SKS, but I believe the mag has to be fixed on the rifle to be legal. That doesn't sound like much fun:( I really want an AR-15, but don't feel like becoming a felon for owning one;) Thanks again!

FWIW

You can buy 10 round stripper clips for the sks for ~$0.20 a piece.

loading with strippers

you're right, the magazine must be fixed for the sks to be leagal in CA. :(

you'd be surprised how much fun a sks can be :D, especially for the shooting you're talking about. if you have 20 or 30 round clips for your mini, you're ahead of the game :). but there's no doubt in my mind that i can reload my sks faster than i could change magazines in my mini-14

I too live in the "Republik of Kalifornia" and from what you are describing it sounds like the Mini 14 is for you. I have one and have really enjoyed it. Yes, there are limitations placed on it that are not present in other states and that can be VERY frustrating. But it is a very fun 100 yard semi auto. I use mine out at the ranch in Utah and at the range in Kalifornia and have really enjoyed it. It is also good for home defense. I recommend it highly.

G6 -- I don't think there's anything in the replies that isn't good advice. I was going to second the suggestion to get into the CMP program and buy one (or more) Garands. But, if you're looking for a high-quality range rifle, you might also think about an M1 carbine. You'll need to source low-cap mags, but they are out there. I'm not up on CA law, but I think you could make this work and, depending on what you want out of the project, it might work very nicely.
