What else can be done for accuracy - DPMS .204 ruger

If I buy a DPMS .204 ruger what else can I do to enhance accuracy? Trigger upgrade, different barrel, etc. I would of course use the factory barrel until I am in the need of a new barrel.

Reason I ask is I am really wanting trying to figure out bolt action or a AR.

I was looking into a cooper, but they are single shot. I am also looking into savage or remington. Both can be made to have extended/detachable magazines correct? I know some savages are detachable.

With the DPMS- get a free-float tube, match grade trigger, work up reloads, then take some range time to determine whether or not it shoots better than you do.

You're kinda asking some open ended questions. There is a lot that should be studied here, and we can't forsee what issues might arise BEFORE you get any particular firearm. For instance, you might get a CZ 527 in .204 and all it could need is some relief sanded or removed from beneath the bbl. OR to put it better than that- you could get anything and it could shoot one-hole groups all day long right out of the box once you find a load it likes. Go for what best suits your wants, likes, needs, budget and go from there. Once upon a time, gathering ideas for accurizing a rifle was something that was done after it was determined that it didn't perform up to snuff after it was already bought, paid for, put through a proper break-in, and had several different brands and loads of ammo put through it. Not before.
 
I am basically asking what can be done physically to the rifle which is a manufactured rifle to make it as accurate as possible without questioning my shooting capabilities.

I am already leaning towards the dpms. Right now I am just wanting to focus on making it accurate as possible. I understand that different loads, brands etc will have an important role in accuracy as well as the shooter. And who knows, maybe the rifle will shoot great right out of the box. But if not, then what? Free float tube and trigger and if it shoots great with those modifications then great! thats all I have to do. Thats what I want to know :) Thank you!

I am new to certain realms of getting the best accuracy out of a rifle. I am no gunsmith thats why I am here, to learn.

A 223 will shoot as good as it does. The addition of after market junk will just increase the cost.
If you want better accuracy get a bolt action although the AR shoots very well.

Free float tube and trigger as stated by 10-96, but also get the best scope you can afford. Lots of folks complain their new rifle won't shoot when they are using a p-poor $50 China-Mart scope.
 
Sir or Madam,

My recommendations (worth every penny they cost) are as follow:

1) Change nothing before you use it extensively.

2) The greatest accuracy investment can be made with quality practice rounds. The .204 Ruger seems to only come in quality loadings, so this should not be too hard.

3) Unless the barrel from DPMS is of poor quality (unlikely and if it is, just send it back), shoot out the factory barrel, then give Kreiger a call.

4) Trigger packages can make a Stoner pattern rifle easier to shoot, but why drop the money until you know the factory trigger is not up to snuff?

I mean no disrespect, and I hope none has been conveyed. The most inaccurate part of most rifles is the shooter. We are variable beings and somewhat imprecise when it comes to build tolerance.

All of the above can be summed up as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" besides, more ammo is more fun than less ammo.

I don't know what the optimal bbl length for the .204 is- but I say "Go with the DPMS." And I would think that a bbl of either 20" or 24" would be the ticket. AR's are more fun than a whole truckload of speckled pups. And, there are a lot of options available to you after you get your lower- such as several different calibers and bbl lengths. The upppers can be shipped direct to your door in most places in the U.S.

Just be sure to keep the bolt and bolt carrier group clean and she'll run like a champ! Have fun, and good shooting.

I will most likely go with the dpms when I am ready. The standard length on .204 is usually 26" in bolt action. DPMS's standard is 24" which is fine and what I want. But the 26" is nice too! :)
 
I have a DPMS LR 308B, If the Ruger 204 is as accurate a cartridge as the 308, you will probably find that the DPMS rifle is more accurate than most shooters. The only improvements I added to my rifle when I ordered it was the JP trigger (stock triggers are horrible) and the Cryogenically treated barrel. My rifle shoots consistent sub moa 5 & 10 round groups using a Harris bipod and my own mark 1 mod 2 shoulder. No bags.
If you need better than that, you will need a match grade bolt gun.
My DPMS was not cheap but was an excellent investment in shooting enjoyment.
