What does Austin PD Carry

I was in Austin this weekend. It was a great city, completely different from the my home town of San Jose. Anyway, I was at this burger place, EZ's and I saw something i had never seen before, a cop carring a H&K P7. His partner had a ruger or a browning or something more tradtional. My question is there a standard issue sidearm for the Austin PD?

It ain't mah fault. did I do dat?

they had brown uniforms on. Maybe they were state troopers or the Sherriff. I really don't know. was more in awe by the P7 and they left before I could talk to them.

Austin PD wears dark blue uniforms. The brown uniform is a Travis County Sheriffs Dept deputy. Most of them carry the S&W 4006 and I am sure many Rugers. I have never seen any carry a SA auto. The Tx. DPS is a tan uniform and they are issued the SIG P229 or P226 in .357 SIG and .357 SIG is what all approved firearms are chambered for.

NJ state troopers all carry the HK P7M8. i saw a trooper shooting once with it at the local range. BTW, i shot it better than him :-) like most LEO's he wasn't great with his sidearm.

I wasn't aware that the Glock was APD issue. I have seen many different sidearms used by APD. Smiths, Berreta, Glocks, SIGs, and even a couple of 1911 types (only on 2 officers who were at the local gun show). I have even seen some oldtimers still carrying wheelguns (not that there's anything wrong with that). Same thing with Travis County, I have a friend who carrys a S&W .40 and have seen SIGS and Glocks carried too, though I've never seen a Ruger for duty carry.
Jeff, I recall seeing Austin Park PD's approved list, they specifically stated NO .40 caliber weapons. Any idea why?

I think that the Glock and SIG are the most popular with APD, I thought one of the Glocks was issue, not sure. Not a clue why the Park PD would not approve a .40. VERY popular with Travis County.

FWIW, a friend of mine was an Austin Park Police officer until about a year ago. He was issued a 4-inch S&W Model 66 with APD markings. He's a crack shot with any firearm but I'm sure he requested a revolver--he does not like "jamamatics."

Anyway, he showed me this gun. It was so beat up that if it had been for sale in a gun shop I wouldn't have paid $125 for it. It still worked, though, which of course is the bottom line.

Chink,

Having lived in AUSTIN while attending UT, I distinctly remember that the officers may choose from a list of preapproved sidearms for duty carry. I mostly saw SIG P226s and Glock 17/22s in the PDs rigs. This was back in the early 90's so things may have changed since.
