What do YOU use for 600 or 1000 yd shooting

The thread about 260 versus 308 for long distance shooting is interesting, but I think the caliber decision might be easier than the rifle decision. This is directed at the folks that actually DO shoot targets at long range, and doing it with other than military rifles. I really would like to know what rifle you use or what components (stock, action, barrel, etc.) go together into the rifle you use. And what scopes dominate your field of competition? I'd like this info from the real people and not just the talkers.

>>Navy M1 Garand in .308 and iron sights....

I'm always baffled by this. The front site post is wider than a 18" wide target at 1000 yards. How the heck do you guys do that?

For me, it was a Mod 70 in .300 Win Mag topped with an old fixed power Weaver. 10x if I remember correctly...

Six-o'clock hold. Aiming black on the NRA LR target is 44 inches across. It is not that hard to put the pumpkin on the post.

Wow! There's some serious gear among you long distance shooters. One thing that caught my eye is that you use long barrels (26 inch to 32 inch). I suppose that makes sense if you want to use all the oomph the powder can supply.

Thanks for kind words old roper!

Correct about complete powder burn and extra velocity. Extra barrel length is important for the 1000+ stuff, 600 (mid-range) not so much, saw some juniors shooting 223 & 6BR at the TN state mid-range match (300-500-600) in Memphis and doing very well with it. Mostly 223 easier in the pocket book.

I had to use my 284 cause my mid range rifle was being built - It is a F/TR 308 version.
F-Open 284 weighs in at 23lb 14oz - you don't want to carry it very far:eek:
