Do you think this is a good deal?

NIB SIG P226 NITRON BLACK 9mm for $649

+ $16.00 shipping fee
+ $20.00 backround check fee
+ $50.00 service fee to local FFL
+ $0.00 in taxes

Total of $735.00.

That doesn't sound that great and the FFL fee seems high. I bet you could do about $50.00 cheaper somewhere else. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions as to where.

is it normal for a charge to be added for a background check? my ffl doesnt charge for it, and only has a $10 transfer fee, no matter how many firearms.

The FFL fee seems about $15 too high...also, I'd check around with other FFL holders about the background check fee. At the range where I work, we generally charge $5 for our check. CCW holders, naturally, aren't charged the $5.

The fee may be different from state to state, too.

Hmm. Do a little more homework before closing this deal.

$50.00 ..ouch!

Mine charges $25.00 w/background check fee included. Typically a $5.00 fee.

It seems a decent deal. Not a great deal mind you, but a decent deal. About what I would expect to pay if I purchased it from a gunshop and paid tax.

Two different shops have told me there is a "State fee" of $20.00.

Can anyone verify this? (I live in CA).

TN has a state fee for background check, so the $20 background fee could be legit. My FFL only charges $10 for the transfer. I have paid as much as $25 for the transfer. For a next day or second day delivery including insurance, shipping seems reasonable. I do not have a clue as to what a Sig P226 is worth.

Wow! Just another ripoff from the great state of California. Here in Virginia, a dealer charges $2 for a background check, if necessary, and that goes to the state police. I have no problem with that, they have to pay for the staff and computer system somehow.

I live in CA. The FFL I use for completion of an internet purchase charges $15 CA DROS (Dealer Record of Sale), $10 for the gun as authorized by DOJ, and $25 for his time to send out a signed copy of his FFL to the seller and track and receive the arm. Total in excess of purchase price less shipping charges negotiated with the seller is $50.

When I buy out of state guns that aren't C&R guns, my FFL charges me $20 for the total deal, transfer and instant check.

Sounds like the $20.00 fee for the backround check is mandatory (as per CA law).

The only issue is how much they charge for the transfer service. Sounds like $50.00 is too high. Unfortunately, I don't know of any other FFL dealers in the area that charge less (I called 3 so far).

By the way, this is the SF Bay Area in California.

A great many gun stores and FFLs have quietly gone out of business in the SF Bay area over the last year. From what I understand, there are now no gun stores within the city limits of both San Francisco and Oakland. From what you have indicated in having called three FFLs, it would appear the word has gotten around that $50 is THE fee, period, for their services. Try the east bay in Contra Costa County or the San Jose area and let us know what you find out.

UMP45,

I am from the South Bay and the prices you quoted are about right in our market. I did a similar price survey not too long ago and was also surprised that it could add up to $90 to the cost of the gun.

This is yet another overpriced item in the Bay Area, in addition to gasoline, food, movies and pretty much everything else.

Yikes ... big bananas. I pay $10 (including background check) total for FFL transfers (shipped into dealer). Nothing more.

You should be able to beat those prices someplace I would think. Perhaps at the local range?

Local Guy

Why don't you post asking if there are any hobbist FFL's that would do this for you. I have a friend with an FFL that doesn't charge me anything to recieve the firearms.

Your FFL is raping you with the transfer fee. Also, as others have said, the background check is very high. My state mandates a $2 fee for this.
