What do you think and would you by it?

That 257 AI looks like some one did a nice job I cant tell what kind of military 98 they used but it will have no problem holding that cartridge. The 257 AI is one of my all time favorite cartridges, with the proper hand loads it will take anything you will find around here. Not that I would recommend it I have use mine on Elk using 115 gr. Noslers never had to shoot one more than once and never had one get away. But where it really shines is on Deer and Antelope I have had real good luck with just plan old 100gr Remington core locks. Over all I think it is a well respected cartridge. I have built a bunch of them for friends and family and everyone loves them. If you could get it for the right price it would be a nice addition to anyones collection.

The Winchester is priced too high at $1100, you can buy a current production Mod 70 for that much without the dings and nicks. Of course, if ya gotta have a Winchester, go ahead.

That Mauser is a small ring FN M98, and it looks really nice, well worth the $750.

The ad says its a FN mauser. looks commercial, not military to me but the pics aren't good enough to know for sure.

Personally, I think the .257 roberts is OK, but it really won't do any thing a .243 won't do.

I have a 6.5x.257 roberts that I just got, and I really wish they would have left it in 6.5 Arisaka 60 years ago when they sporterized it. The .257 Roberts is a bad cartridge to find ammo for unless you are a reloader, it's an oddball with no real purpose or niche other than being different.

It's kind of like owning a Beta videotape machine. It does pretty much the same thing that another machine does just as well or better for significantly lower cost with greatly improved logistics.

Thanks guys, I do not need it now and guns seeem to be cheaper after the first of the year so I am going to wait.

Mauser is a sweet looking rifle, betting it came from an estate. Nobody sells a gun like that unless it won't shoot or they inherited it and don't understand.

I'd try n get the Winchester for 900 and the Mauser for 600. They're both sharp rifles tho. Its hard for me to justify spending that much on rifles on the internet. You can never know how many rounds and how they were cared for barrel wise.

I have a Featherweight just like it in 257 Roberts, its a sweet gun. Mine is my primary hunting rifle for deer/antelope size animals.

I didn't pay that much, but then again I got mine in the late 80s.

Back in the 60's the choice I was confronted with was the .257 Roberts, or the 6mm Remington for the one gun shooter. I went with the 6mm Remington and am glad I did. I find I went varment hunting more than deer hunting and the 100 PSP did just fine for deer, but the 75 grain JHP is a humdinger for varments. The Speer 70 grain bullet did not give me the accuracy that the 75 grain bullet did in my rifle.

I suspect for the one rifle owner the .257 Roberts is as good a choice today as it was in the 60's. Those rifles seem a bit pricey, but then I guess it comes down to what you really want. Personally I'd go into local gun shops and see what they they have in stock. My local gun smith shop typically has a couple hundred used guns in stock and I'm sure the .257 Roberts would be represented among his collection.

I have recently discovered a nice Winchester M70 in 30-06 can be had for $450. The 30-06 can be fired with 100 grain to 220 grain. Midium to heavy game Vs. light to medium game. Again it all depends upon what you really want.

Would I buy the two guns you posted ? No, but I would be tempted by that mauser ... It is just too pricey for what I would be looking to use.
