What do you store your ammo in?

I've been looking for a cheap tool box or tackle box to store ammo in, but things I've found are either not cheap IMO or they are too small.

I will be storing my ammo in the boxes not loose so ammo cans are no good for me. I usually have around 1,000 round of .40 (in 10 boxes of 100) & now I have a few hundred rounds of .22 to add to that & some boxes of .223 & SG shells as soon as I order those guns.

I prefer whatever I use to have a provision for a pad lock as well.
 
Dont discount ammo cans so quickly. 100% of my commercial ammo is in the ammo boxes and then inside ammo cans. They are cheap, airtight and waterproof. I have commercial ammo from the 30's through 50's that looks like it just came off the shelf - all stored in ammo cans. All goes boom when I pull the trigger.

As far as lockable solution, maybe an upright tool chest. Those usually have ability to lock. Try to focus more on ones with shelves and drawers that arent too shallow.
 
Minus the ability to lock, why would you discount ammo cans? Cheap, solid and seal up nice and tight. In my opinion, its the best way to store ammo.
 
I use surplus .50 cal ammo cans for all my ammo. Bought some on cheaperthatdirt.com and some from a nice old vet down the street :)
 
Funny, I used to play paintball a while back. Dicks Sporting Goods offered paint in these black plastic 'ammo cans' and I just saved them over the years. You can usually find them (empty) at sporting goods stores. I just put the boxed ammo in it, works fine.

Have you looked at the larger ammo cans. I have two 20MM cans that I store ammo in and they are rather large and yet manageable. ...

I use plastic and surplus ammo cans, stored in a cabnet that I built with lock on the doors. It can hold up to twenty ammo cans.
 
I have exactly what Chris in VA shows in his picture. Mine is camo and bought new, but it works great. It even has a little tray inside for the stuff you want quick access to. There is a 'hidden' compartment on the lid also.

It was about $11, but it should last until TEOTWAWKI.
 
small wooden footlockers are good for this application. I have used them and still do. They will be susceptible to moisture so you need to consider that as a problem, otherwise, they are adequate for me. Good luck
 
I use the small ammo cans and the 20 MM cans....those 20's can get really heavy if you fill them all he way, but throw some dessicant packs, and seal them shut, and they do a great job of keeping ammo in good condition - especially here in humid FL!
 
I was using a two door steel cabinet but was given an older gun safe by a friend's father and am now using that for rimfire and centerfire ammo. The shotgun ammo has migrated to locked cabinets in the basement. Where are you getting your ammo, Magic? If I recall, you are near abouts that fruit flavored hill (:rolleyes:) and I would suggest AMMOMAN down in Berlin. Took a drive this past Friday, about an hour for me and a friend. Bought 2000 rounds of Wolf and Federal 5.56/.223, various handgun rounds and some 00 Buck for pennies a round. Awesome sales and service, check it out (www.ammoman.com). Fathead, I foundammoman a while ago, but the hours listed on the site are 7am - 12pm weekdays. I can't get there during those hours.
 
I use a six shelf horizontal file cabinet I kept from my office when I retired - works for me.

You not going to find anything better than a surplus military ammo box. They're plentyful, sturdy, cheap, stackable, and come in various sizes/dimensions. If you want to lock it, get this from CTD:

I generally store ammo in the army ammunition boxes.

I also have some ammo stored in a large thick plastic tool box/storage box for contractors that are sold at Home Depot and Lowes. There are lockable varieties in plastic if that is important to you. They also sell metal ones if you prefer.

Ammo that I use frequently is store on shelves sorted by brand and caliber.
 
Like most of the others, I store mine in .30 & .50 cal mil surp ammo cans stacked & locked in a vertical cabinet.
