Well....this very issue is a major problem in PA. Local fishwraps all had articles on the PGC ( PA Game Commission) and it's policies during Rifle Season.

For those not in PA, the PGC has antler restrictions on bucks (3 or more points only are legal) and has given out a lot of doe permits over the last few years. The results have been unhappy hunters and fewer deer.

I have lived on my property for three years, the first two years I found tracks and droppings in abundance, this year almost none. I do not hunt (Deer anyway) but live in an area with many hunting cabins and hunting club properties.

Did not see many deer hanging after opening day.

I do see a lot of roadkill, near the Nature Conservancy property.

Stocking coyotes ? Coyotes have done very well without any stocking. They can be found almost anywhere in the country and into Canada. They are also considerably larger than the south western type , a 60-70 lb one is not unusual in the NE. ....Many areas in PA and NY have problems due to issuing excessive numbers of doe permits over the years .Here in Sullivan Co NY it's a disaster 20 members of one club in 5 days got only one buck !! So I hunted in Pike Co PA which is a little better but not much.

I'm no longer in Pennsylvania, but the Patriot News had a bunch of articles about deer population and hunting season when I was home for Thanksgiving.

My Father is of the opinion that most people simply aren't willing to really hunt for the deer, and that many simply move deeper into the woods in front of the huge masses of people who go out the first couple of days.

I never bothered going out the first few days. I always let the hoards of hunters thin out, and then hunted DEEP in the mountains, away from the roads. I had fairly decent success doing that.

We herja the first time, Mike.:D

Lotsa deer in the suburbs where ya can't hunt.

Since 2001, when the numbers of doe permits sold per year nearly doubled, the deer numbers on public lands in the north central part of the state where I hunt have plummetted. There were some tough winter kill years in there and bad mast crop years mixed in too, but mostly I blame it on too many doe tags sold.

Wanna help? Buy a doe tag for your favorite area and burn it.

Oh. K80geoff, that's 3 or more points on one side. It takes some pretty good eyes to count that closely if the deer is on the move. Lucky for me that doesn't apply to Jr., Sr., or dis-abled hunters.

I feel that overall that the idea behind them is good, but I have found that the WCOs in my area seem more than inept. They all do alot of community based things such as the Youth Field Days and the Hunter's Safety Education programs. But when it comes to putting their boots down on the ground in the woods, well, let's just say that they don't do much of it. \

The former WCO (he retired some years ago) was a great man and was an avid outdoorsman. You would see him at least once on the first day of hunting season. And I mean for every game season. He made his presence known, but he wasn't a dick about anything. He was very good WCO.

The one we have now is a complete cluster****. He isn't seen in the woods. He is usually to busy riding around and not picking up roadkill. He just isn't seen or heard. He kind of makes him self disappear, especially when people seem to need him the most. He isn't one to really do anything other than harass the law-abiding hunters and let the bad guys get away. As far as poachers go: He hasn't stopped them or even out a dent in their numbers.

Overall I think they are rather good here in PA. But it all depends on the individual WCO. My only real complaint is that of the prices rising in order to support their ever burgeoning budget.

"Lotsa deer in the suburbs where ya can't hunt."

Of course there are. Deer will be found anywhere where there is easy browse, and deer simply LOVE a lot of the ornamentals that people plant.

But, they don't all have suburban addresses or are in areas where you can't hunt. As I said, I really think it's pretty futile to go out on the first day or two. Too many people just drive the deer away from areas where they're normally seen.

It's estimated that there are more deer in Pennsylvania today than there were east of the Mississippi in 1700. The main reason for that is the wholesale replacement of old growth forrest (very poor at sustaining populations of deer) with steady, readily available food supplies, including gardens, farms, and low natural browse.

If you're going to hunt the first couple of days, then you're going to have a lot more problems, and you'll have to try to get away from the masses of people.

The big issue in MI seems to be what people believe to be over-issuance of doe tags. For private land, I can buy one per day. With a doe season from October to January, that is a LOT of deer I can shoot.

As far as actual numbers, the one check station crossing the Bridge had a sign up tha tdeer harvest was down 5% from last year.
