what do you guys think of Rossi R462 .357 Mag Revolver?

i am on a limited buget and i want to get a .357. to plink and to use it when i go camping. or out to the ranch.

can i also use 38 specials?

at academy it cost $258.89

i would like to get a s&w 686 but can't afford it. i can't save up to get it because the rest of the money will go to school, gas, and paintball. thanks

My Brother had one and had some Problems with cylinder binding. Generally I don't think they are worth the money. For a good DA revolver in the $250 dollar range I would recomend a used Ruger Security Six. You should be able to get one for the same money in like new condition. A much better gun.

If you can deal with single action, I would recomend a Ruger Blackhawk. Built like a tank and will last forever.

Not much. I had two Rossi's. Fool me once, Fool me twice, that's it.

Go online and pick up a used SW or Ruger. If I didn't own 1 gun for SD, I'd pick up a rock before I'd pick up a Rossi...

You will, however, receive allot of positive posts on Rossi guns. I'm just not one of them...

Good luck,

Edit...About a month ago I purchased a Colt Trooper .357 MK lll in 98% condition on Auction Arms for $269.00.

POJ I suggest a Armscor Limited Edition revolver for a NIB purchase. A Ruger GP-100 DAO stainless or a S&W M13/M19/M65 used revolver would work wel and be in that price range. A Colt Lawman MKIII in blue would be included too. Skip Rossi.

Sir Will

You're right! I own a Colt Lawman, not a Trooper. They say about aging. The brain is the first thing to go!

For the type of use you plan you would be alot better off looking for a used S&W K frame, Colt or Ruger. Lots of good deals out there on police trade ins. As SGHTOS suggested, a Ruger Security Six would be an exellent choice.

I have a Rossi 641 (the 642's blued cousin). The quality seems okay, accuracy is good, but the D/A trigger is fairly heavy. Mine is just a range gun (i have a small snubby collection that i like to play with), it only has about 500 rounds of mostly .357's or .38+p's through it so i'm not really sure how it would hold up to alot of shooting.

Bullrock, I saw that but, I know many who lump all MK series Colts under Trooper. Metropolitans even. I am as lucky as you are to own blued, nickel, 2" and 4" barrels and even a RB Colt Lawman MKIII 357 Magnum and MKIII Troopers also. I have two generations of Police Positives and am looking around for other Colts. If I had a choice between a rusty and crusty Colt and a NIB Rossi, I would take the rusty and crusty Colt everytime.

I really like my 462.
Once I got the ejector rod tight I had no more cylinder binding.
It is accurate, dependable,(now anyway) comfortable to shoot with either .357 or .38's.
Single action trigger is real nice.
Double action is a bit stiff but I have gotten used to it.

I picked it up slightly used for $219.00

I have a 6" stainless Rossi from early 90's never had a single hitch very accurate, paper plates at 100 yards. My uncle had consecutive serial number to mine had timing issue sent it back twice second time came back it was a brand new firearms (we checked serial numbers). He hasn't had a problems since then. I would buy again.

I had (notice that is past tense) a Rossi 971 that I purchased used. At best, it was OK. Cylinder tended consistently to bind after less than 50 rounds. I also have a Rossi model 68 which IMHO is better than the 971 was. I would look for used S&Ws, Colts or Rugers. I have one each in .357. Buy well and with reasonable care, they will go up in value. I doubt the Rossi will, especially if you buy new.

Agree with the others, stay away from Rossi...had one when I was younger and the thing spit more lead back at me than out the barrel.

I've heard the Rossi 720 is there only GOOD one..

.44 Special snub. I handled one...I really liked it, almost grabbed it...went with another small piece for carry.

I also had problems with a 462. Issue was the cylinder would not always lock up and it would fire out of time and/or bind. I second going with a used Security Six, Ruger GP or Smith.

To answer your other question, if I missed a previous reply or so, you may shoot .38spls out of any .357 magnum. The cylinders will get pretty nasty just forward of the casing mouth and firing .357s just after .38s, without a cleaning, becomes difficult. The crud in the cylinders makes it hard to load and eject .357s. If you're going to shoot both at the same range session, shoot the .357s first.
