Just love California. Was all ready to purchase my taurus 44 mag model 44 and found out that California is not going to allow it after the 19th of Jan. I sent payment and everything. So i need to find a replacement instead. I think taurus is out now. I keep hearing bad things. I am wondering if anyone has shot the super redhawk 480? How bad is the kick? Is it worthy of a bear protection gun-"Blackies". Or should i just stick with the 44. I also hunt boar. I have $550 to spend. Cost of ammo is no concern, i can buy ammo over time in small bunches!

The 480 relates to the 475 Linebaugh like the 44 Spl relates to the 44 Mag. While it does have advantages over the 44 Mag and 45 LC, like heavier bullets and lower pressures for the same power, it doesn't have the flexibility of the 454/45LC duet.

If it were my money, I'll get a 454.

I have a 5" Taurus 480 and I love it.

I personally think it's a nice comprimise between big bore and recoil. It won't wear you out like a 454.

Disclaimer: I haven't actually shot one. Got to be honest.

But I sure have read a lot of reports about .480's being a lot more fun to shoot than the same gun in .454. If I want a "fun gun" then the .480 sounds like a winner. If I was going to climb a ridge somewhere to shoot a once in a lifetime elk, I would probably go .454. You really need to reload to enjoy shooting things like these. (Unless you are totally wealthy!)

So yes, I think a .480 would be a lot of fun to own. I'm always ready to try something different. And it would be fun to learn to reload a new caliber with those monster cases and bullets.
