What do readers think?

The 35 column inch story, including photos, dealing with the shooting incident in North West Wisconsin Sunday started on Page 1 of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It likely appears in other papers too. The article originated in the Washington Post, and was so bylined.

What was especially interesting about this story was the description of the weapon used, "a Chinese made SKS semi-automatic rifle", this in the Washington Post, with none of the usual drivel that invariably accompanies anything seen, read or heard in or on either print or broadcast journalism outlets about "assault weapons", when there is any involvement at all with firearms. During last nights 11 PM news, KDKA did not get things right.

In any event, aside from having long wondered as to exactly how so many supposedly sharp reporters and commentators could manage to get simple things so wrong, for so long, regarding there journalistic efforts concerning anything having to do with firearms, one does wonder about one thing, and the possible significance that the handling of this particular story MIGHT have.

Could it be that, at long last, The Worm Has Turned, or might this be the beginning of that worm's turning? What do readers think?

I noticed the same thing. When I first heard about the incident, my first reaction was empathy for the hunters and their families. My second reaction was a sense of dreaded antiscipation...of how the anti-gunners would jump all over it and use it for their crusade. Yet, I haven't heard any of the "drivel" either.
Perhaps it is on the way...or perhaps since it happened to hunters, the anti-gunners are going to ignore it. My reasoning is that part of their propaganda involves the assertion that they are "pro-hunter" and that the sportsman has nothing to fear from their anti-gun legislation. If the guy had shot 5 people outside a McDonalds they would be all over it, no doubt.

In my paper today, there was a story about a DOJ study of "hate crimes" right next to an update from Wisconsin. Must've been a coincidence, since surely most media employees don't believe that a so-called hate crime could be committed AGAINST whites BY a 'minority' of any kind. Or are a few of the reporters starting to wake up and smell the coffee?

Oddly enough...

I don't think an SKS was an assault rifle covered by the Clinton Ban.

But why should accuracy and facts bother a reporter?

Interesting sidenote: according to Fox reports, the shooter had removed himself from the tree stand, went to his truck, removed the scope from his SKS, then turned and began firing on the hunters. Reason for removal of the scope? Assuming he was not using removable magazines, the only reason to remove the scope on an SKS would be if you felt the need to charge the fixed magazine quickly with a stripper clip rather than loading it by hand one round at a time. As problematic as it is sighting in an SKS with a scope, one would not remove it unless deer hunting became secondary. With the time it took, he could have simply driven away.

on a bad note. i have been told that the anti gunners have sent multiple requests to bush to ban imports of all forgein assault rifles
