What distance should a mini-30 be zeroed at?

Im not planning on taking shots over 300 yards and probably less than that. What range should I set the zero for to cover shorter and longer shots as well. Would this be the same for scope vs irons?

200 yard would do, probley not much left beyond 300, Sold mine years ago and thats about as far as away as I could hit something with the cheap ammo I had. yours may be better.

I have mine set at 75 yards, that's also good for 150 yard shots. Anything beyond that is a hope and a prayer.

My Mini-30 is on at 100. I figure I'm good for deer, its primary target, to
150.

The mini-30 is a great little carbine, an ideal combo of cartrige and rifle, but it is not really a 300 yd varminter. The Mini-14 and the .223 ctg would flatten trajectories a bit and be more suited to that role.

If a coyote offers a 6MOA taget, your mini will have to give 2 MOA at 100 to be viable. And that is theoretical accuracy, not counting for bullet drop.

There is an outfit that mods the Mini family for accuracy in TX. Uh........Accuracy Systems maybe?

We'll see how accurate it is/I am with it. I didn't get it for long range shots. No confusion there. Plan to get a bolt action 308 for that. Got this for my "do everything" one rifle. Have always read about the same consensus for the 3030 as the 7.62x39. Good 150 yards and in deer rifle. Plan on limiting it to about that. Don't think ill put a scope on it either if its/im good enough w the iron sights. Will consider it though maybe a low magnification scope or a scout setup/red dot type even.

Yep Accuracy Systems Inc is the company. From everything I've seen on the 7.62x39 it's comparable to the .30 WCF (30-30), I doubt I'd be inclined to shoot beyond 200 yards with it. It might be fun to plink at that range, but I wouldn't take a shot at a critter beyond 200. I'd agree that the .223 is going to shoot a bit flatter and make 300yd shots easier. I'm certain that 300yd shots are possible with the 7.62x39, but I'm sure it's a bit easier with the .223. That being said I'd zero at 100 yds personally.

I went with 7.62x39 over .223. Yes good ammo is harder to find and more expensive but most seem to agree the 30 cal bullet is better for hunting.

Using a +1 1/2" at 100 yards will put you at zero at 150 yards and -4" at 200 yards. I wouldn't shoot that round at anything I was hunting at any distance further than that. At 300 yards you are down 20" and at 400 yards you are down 50" double that at 500 yards. Just between you me and the shooting Gods it is like the 30-30, best used between 50 and 150.

the 7.62x39 is a combat round that is normally battle zeroed at 50 yards but for sporter distance I would say that a 150 yard zero(getting about 3-4" groups) would be just about perfect for a deer/hog gun. aim a little low for 100 yards, aim really low for 50 yards and aim kinda high for 200 and over

What are some good resources for this rifle? Im not going to be able to go to the bookstore and find 5 books on it like I could a 1911 or AR15.

As you grow older your eyes are unable to focus on iron sights. In anticipation of this I would mount a 1X4 or 1x5 scoope and sight in for 100 yards. Leupold or Burris make some of the best scoped in the wrold.
