A Savage .22cal/20ga over-under?
It belongs to a friend of my son, taking them both out for youth weeked pheasant tomorrow - he got it from his Grandads estate.
It's a Savage 24J-DL. Stainless receiver blue barrel. Has a coyote engraved on one side, a turkey on the other.
On top of the .22 barrel, it says .22 Long Rifle but "long rifle" is X'ed out and in smaller stamps behind that it has "Mag."
I'd just like to know about it so in the morning I can impress the kid with my infinite knowledge of firearms. :p

WOW! Funny you should mention that weapon. That was the first type of shotgun I ever fired. My father has a 20ga/.22magnum O&U. Its a beatiful shotgun even though the stock is kind beat up.

AFAIK its old. My father got his on a hunting trip 28 or more years ago. Very rarely do we ever find one at the gun shows we go too. We are looking so we can figure out what its worth.

Sorry I can offer any technical information. I love my fathers and cant wait until I get to take ownership of it.

Neat guns. Not sure what I'd use one for, but it's on list list of things to buy when the cash appears.

The rifle barrel appears to be a rechamber job for .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum.

Lots of these Model 24s were made by Savage, usually in 22LR/20 ga or 22Mag/20 ga, but lots of 410s out there also. The reason one sees few for sale is that they make great starter or truck guns, and backpackers like them also.

BTW, that's not a Stainless Steel receiver, but a plating over standard steel.

I mounted a peep sight on the one I had and sling studs, making it an all around squirrel gun, suitable for foraging and fun. If I were doing it now, I'd probably do the trigger also, it was not as light as it could be.

By happy chance, once my peep was set for the 22 HPs I preferred, the same POA worked for the 20 ga Rottweil Brenneke slug at 40 yards.I took a deer or two with it until I realized that rifles, even 22s, in shotgun counties were verboten.

I have seen one or two of these that had ignition probs with the shotgun function. An ammo change fixed up one.

Just got back in from the hunt, saw lots of birds but it's been so warm they were getting up way too far in front of us.
The boy with the Savage had a hard time remembering to cock it first. My son had a couple of real good oportunities but the safety was on and didn't get the shot off in time.
Oh well, we had a good time and saw lots of birds!

SK, sounds like everytime I go hunting. Well, it does provide a good excuse to buy ammo and go shooting.

"Honey, did you see the look on his little face. We have to practice more--that's why we can't buy anymore shoes for you."

Hey, it's "For the children"
We've got to go to the range this afternoon and get ready for deer season. More ammo, more shootin'!

My old 410/.22 lr will be passed on to my son as soon as he passes hunter ed safety. One comment, though, about it's use as a "backpack" firearm. This barrel has a lot more steel in it than most 410's I've seen. It's quite heavy for its size. Makes for a pretty accurate rifle at the range, though.

The 22 bbls seem to be quite accurate. Mine was. Being attached to all that steel would tend to keep the bbl harmonics uniform, aiding accuracy no end.

If I could find one of these cheap(yeah, right), Son would be getting oneheckuva Hannukah present this year. He might even let me play with it sometimes(G)....

I have a Savage 24-C in 30-30/20 Ga. it is a TON of fun!

as for a 22/410, I prefer my Garcia Bronco in 22/410 (and also the .410 only and .22 only versions)

Although it's been covered, I just had to say "They're heavy." The centerfire models are currently listed at 8 pounds.

The .410/.22 mag. model I got in the very early 1960s shot just fine. It was just too heavy for a 10- or 11-year-old to carry up and down the mountains for a whole day.

Now, for sitting and waiting on a squirrel, rabbit or groundhog to show it was just fine.

John

P.S. - I was so smart I traded it on a new 12 ga. Fox Model B/full/mod. Just what every 13-year-old needs!
