What can I get for under $900?

Well I did my taxes and my wonderful wife (She is the Best!) said I can have $900 of our return for a new rifle. I already have a Leopould Var X-II 3 X 9 by 40 that I will put on it although I will probably upgrade in the future. I want it chambered in a 25-06. By the way I want a rifle with a synthetic Stock.

Ok here is what I am thinking about now.

1. A remington 700 BDL and put a McMillan Fiberglass stock and have a tigger job done on it.

2. Sako 75 in the Stainless Synthetic Configuration.

Please let me know other options that are availble in this price range.

Kudos to your wife! IMHO, I think the Remington 700 BDL is a great choice! What you might want to do is head to a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World (or something similar) where they have a huge variety of bolt rifles and fondle them and see what feels good to you. You will be able to get one heck of a nice rifle with the money you have available. (plus, have some left over to spend on other things.)

Have fun. :D

kgs.

His wife really is a nice person. :) I'm glad to see you are finally able to go for that rifle!

R&H, check lock & load forum. We are having another Utah get-together. I'm moving down to West Jordan, I finally got a job, but give me a call, I'll give you the details. Jay is driving down from Logan, he would probably love some company.

IF a Sendaro is made in 25-06, and you want a heavy barrel, get the Sendaro. Otherwise, get a Tikka. On the other hand, you could get two Tikkas.

Mossberg 500

+

Savage Tactical

+

Ruger 10/22

Could get all those for under 900 out the door.

If I had 900 smackers to put into a rifle right this minute, I'd be cruising the gunshops looking for something from the Remington Custom Shop. But then again...I looked at a Model 70 in .25-06 the other day that was very, very nice! Another suggestion is to go to

http://www.gunsamerica.com

and see if there's a Sako available in .25-06.

Excellent choice of caliber, by the way!

Go with the Sako. I've owned three of them and prefer them to just about any Remington (40X and some custom shop models excepted). The 75 Synthetic will do everything you need and more.

Hey man,

Check out http://www.auctionarms.com there is a 25-06 Remington Sendaro NIB going for under $600. Also a couple of Winchester mod 70s, and a Ruger 77 in the same caliber. I couldn't find any Sakos in that caliber there. But the guy selling the Remington has a good record of satisfied customers.

Hope that helps.

How about a Blaser 93? Jeff Cooper says it's one of the best rifles out there now (short of his Steyr Scout, of course). They are nice rifles.

Get a Sako 75 Stainless Synthetic or a Tikka Deluxe.

You just won't believe how these things will feel, right out of the box. I defy any Remington/Winchester owner to beat one of these in terms of smoothness, accuracy and trigger.

As for caliber..... Get a 7-08 in the Tikka or let your imagination run wild with Sako (300Rem Ultra Mag...Yum!)

another vote for the Blaser R93

but then i like bleeding edge technology

You've never seen a bolt action rifle like this.
Because the Blaser R 93 is truely a new way of thinking.

There's no other rifle system with the versality or pure shooting ability of the R 93.
Seventeen different standard and magnum calibers, including the new .300 Ultra Mag., ensure that ther's
a perfect choice for any hunting challenge.
Due to its revolutionairy straight-pull bolt and radial lock-up, the bolt mates directly to the barrel with full
360° locking contact for superior strength and rigidity. Because the R 93 locks directly into the barrel, the
R 93's frame receives minimum stress which allows the rifle to be both lighter and shorter, so it's easy to
carry and quicker handling.
The trigger is sear-free, and designed so the "creep" is eliminated. Let-off is crisp and precise.
Scope mounts directly to the barrel, so that rifles can be easily broken down and reassembled without
changing point of impact.
barrels are cold hammer-forged and are machined to accept detachable scope mounts. They are
free-floated, so that atmospheric changes won't affect your point-of-aim.
The R 93's straight-pull bolt is an engeneering marvel and includes a safety which actually
cocks/decocks the firing mechanism.
There's even a rubber bumper built into the magazine well to protect bullet tips from recoil damage.
The list is endless.

9 innovative patents in one remarkable rifle!

Blaser rifles are offered in a variety of models, calibers and styles to meet any hunting need. Choose
from the rugged R 93 Synthetic with its weatherproof stock or the R 93 LX for traditional styling at an
affordable price. Or, step up to the R 93 Classic, Grand Luxe or Attaché. Designed with input from law
enforcement and target shooters is the new R 93 LRS2 "Long Range Sporter".

All these R 93 models provide the follwing basic features:

Radial collet locking system is significantly stronger than the standard locking lugs.
Interchangable barrel system to have several calibers in one single rifle. To take down the
barrel and reassemble the rifle takes less than a minute.
Interchangable bolt heads are used to allow the system to accommodate both standard and
magnum calibers. Bolt heads can be exchanged within seconds. No tools needed.
The safety system is the most advanced available on a bolt action rifle. The 3-position
ambidextrous safety actually decocks the entire fire mechanism when it is set.
Left hand bolts are available in all grades. Simply exchanging the bolt assembly turns the rifle
into a true left-hand version. It even ejects to the left.
Unique magazine design positions cartridges for direct in-line feeding.
Patent sear-free trigger mechanism.
Barrel is machined for quick detach scope mounts.
Quick detachable scope mounts are designed for consistently repeatable point-of-impact.
Dual load-bearing scope mounting rings are used, in either standard aluminum alloy or steel; high
rings are also available.

Anyone know the MSRP of the R93 synthetic?

$900...

Hmm...

$400 for donor Remington ADL

$500 for truing and new match-grade barrel, chambered by a high-end benchrest smith.

A heckuva lot better rifle than you can buy over the counter, even via a "custom shop."

Add a new $250 stock when you have the cash.
