What can I expect in trade for an AR15 at a gun show?

My wife gave me a Bushmaster AR15 Shorty A2 for Christmas. I wanted an A3, but none could be found at the time. I've never fired the gun, and I'd like to take it to a gun show here in Fort Worth this weekend and trade it for an A3. Given that I've never used it in any way and have all the original packaging, what percentage of the current value could I reasonably expect to receive in trade with a dealer for an A3?

Why not see if Bushmaster will take it back for a trade in... they can tell if you've fired the rifle or not. Is it still packed in the greasy oil? Or did you wipe it all off?

Another option, go get an a3 upper. Then you can have both, swapping the upper take no more than a couple seconds. I know it's a little expensive, but it give you options should your optics on the a3 fail.

Get a bbl wrench, reciever vice block, A-3 upper and change out the A-2 upper. This would be the cheapest way, do it your self.

If you can install a DSS system, you can build an AR.

I also like the spare upper route it makes for wider verstility from the rifle. depending on the configuration, I suggest more than one upper per lower.

As far as trade in value, I wouldn't take less than 0NE PENNY than your wife paid for it! You could probibly get MORE than what she paid... from the right person. Luck.
anodes.

Pipper, just switch out the receiver. I'd be happy to do it for you. It's a snap.

Email me if you like...

Thanks for all your help. Several problems, however:

1) I know that I couldn't justify purchasing another receiver to my wife.

2) The shop that I purchased the rifle from had it on display, so the greasy oil had been wiped off at the store. If you think it's possible that Bushmaster would swap with me, I'd love to do that.

3) As far as trade-in, she purchased it in 12/99 at pre-Y2K prices: I currently see them selling brand new for $150 less, so I doubt that I can get what I paid for it. Am I right in this regard?

Pipper - I strongly recommend that you avoid trading your rifle as you will certainly lose money. If you must, sell it outright. If it were mine, I'd save my pennies and buy another upper.

Just sell the upper. Keep the bolt and the charging handle. Then when it is sold, buy an A3 upper.

Or just trade the upper only. I would think that you could trade straight up an A2 upper for an A3, if you get an A3 without the carry handle.

Pipper, you're right. Expect at least $100-$150 less than new, just for taking it out of the box. You'll do better to sell it complete to a private party than to go the trade in route, no matter who it's to.
Alternately, you could sell the upper only, and purchase the upper assy that you want, complete and new from Bushy!!!
BTW, which barrel do you have, I might be in a position to make you an offer!
